    Cambridge Audio A5 cap replacement..?

I was thinking about (note: only *thinking*) replacing the capacitors in my amp, a Cambridge Audio A5. Reading about 'Black Gate' capacitors, and how fantastic they're supposed to be.

So really, do you think it'll be worth it? I don't actually know what's in there at the minute. Also, will I be needing any 'special' kind of solder to get the best out of it? I've got a reel of Antex (same make as me iron) lead free solder, silver based (or something like that). Says "Sn97, Ag2.5 Cu0.5 0.8mm".

There's actually nothing wrong with the amp, but if I can improve sound quality by just replacing caps...... then I figured why not.

imho to improve sound quality get better speakers that match with your amp.

i was looking at a black gate site. http://www.blackgate.jp/ but could not find any specs heh.

cd player clock upgrades, external dacs are interesting.

Re: Cambridge Audio A5 cap replacement..?

Black Gates are mostly marketing snake-oil. The best general audio-grade caps are fairly inexpensive - Elna RJH or Panasonic FC/FM - they're widely used by a variety of excellent Japanese manufacturers, including Matsushita (all brands, including Technics), Alpine, Onkyo, Marantz, etc. Anything more expensive is money down the drain.

The only avenues to significant improvements in sound quality in an audio system are to improve the speaker quality, speaker layout and room accoustics - that's the most bang-for-the buck. Any other tweaking is mostly wasted. The worst value comes from so-called 'oxygen-free' or 'silver wire' or 'Monster' speaker cables - don't waste your money. A difference of even 1 ohm in DC resistance in a speaker cable is not going to alter sound quality in a perceptible way, only the power level going into the speaker.

High-Sn (high-tin) solders are susceptible to long-term reliability problems from tin-whiskers - I'd use stock 60:40 or 63:37, which flow easily, wet easily and last for 50+ years.

Ah ok. I guess I probably shalln't waste my money then. Though I suppose if I take a look and find a crappy brand of caps in there maybe it might be worth replacing them regardless of whether sound quality might be improved? Maybe?

I know about the whole cable thing. Didn't waste my money getting expensive over-advertised hyped up cable.

I actually find this solder flows ALOT more easily than what I was using before :-s Then again, I don't really know what it was that I was using before.

Help troubleshooting an audio problem with an RCA SGT-250 CED Player
            by samson7point1@yahoo.com
The Problem: This player has a toggle switch to select between Stereo, Mono R, and Mono L. Regardless of the setting it outputs the sound to both the L&R audio jacks. In the Mono R position, the audio output level is normal (from both the L and R audio output jacks), in the Stereo position the audio output is about half the volume, and in Mono L, it's about 3/4 the volume. Something about putting it into Stereo mode is causing the volume to drop significantly and I can't figure it out.

The player processes the audio signal using two different reference frequencies. The "R"...

Cambridge Audio Azur 550A Power Supply Cap Replacement
            by 3Phase615V
            Hi,

I isolated a power supply failure in my Cambridge Audio Azur 550A to a shorted filter cap (C42, page 37 - see service manual attached) on the +45V supply of the right-hand channel PCB. The faulty cap is a Cambridge Audio branded "Audio Grade" 2200uF, 63V, 105°C 18mmx35.5mm (see attached photo), for which CA have refused datasheet information and the supply of a replacement(s) as they advise they do not supply these items to "end users".

Since audio grade caps rarely appear available at more than 50V (105°C) it has me wondering whether or not...

MacBook Air 2337 - Right I/O Board Audio IC - Alternative Replacement?
            by grimacelord
            Hello,

I'm working on a MacBook Air A2337 that had liquid damage on the right I/O board. I ultrasonic cleaned the board and it all functions except the computer has no audio. I tried reballing the audio IC which is TAS5770AC0, but that did not restore audio. I could just replace the entire board, but I wanted to see if replacing the audio IC would fix it first. Mouser has a similar audio IC in stock which is TAS5770LC0YFFR, but I wasn't sure if it is compatible. I was just wondering if anyone knew if I could use the one from mouser as an acceptable replacement or if I need to purchase...

Cambridge Audio Stream Magic 6 - Power Supply
            by smurtz
I have here a Cambbridge Audio Stream Magic 6 which does not power on.
When opening the case the PSU appears to be faulty:

IC1 (ICE3BR0665J), D2, the rectifier bridge, C15,C16 are dead and T2 is fried:

I found the schematics of the PSU in the cambridge Audio CXN Service guide which uses the same:
My problem is that I cannot find any info on T2 (SG01323) which seems to be a choke. Anyone knows how I can find a replacement & the value of that choke ?

            Thanks very much in advance...

what i went through dealing with my mobo with dead onboard sound!
            by ChaosLegionnaire
so i took out one of my spare gigabyte ep35-ds3r mobos from storage for use to do some cpu, ram and video card testing of stuff i bought from ebay and got for free from momaka. he bought 50 e8400 cpus for cheap from ebay some years ago and i decided to help him relieve him of some of his supply since he had waaaay too many!! what did we say about hoarding too much stuff and depriving others of them?! *cough* socialism *cough* lol!

i had to blow some dust off the board and heatsinks with the datavac as i didnt clean it up before putting it in storage. after finishing...
