    Conformal coating?

What's the difference between conformal coating for circuit boards and other coatings, like acrylic transparent fingernail polish or spray acrylic enamel or urethane paint? Apparently the transparent colors don't conduct, even at high frequencies.

I just want something to re-coat copper traces where the original conformal coating has come off, to make it less likely that i'll create solder bridges.

    Re: Conformal coating?

I usually tape off the area and hit exposed traces with spray lacquer I'm more worried about copper oxidation than insulation value.

This is on the rare occasion I need to scrape the coating off to test a trace without tracing it all the way to it's termination point. Or if the end of the trace isn't easily accessible like on a multi layer PCB.

They do make PCB lacquer but it's pretty hard to find.

Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.

      It's Acrylic Lacquer

Fingernail polish has all sorts of other crap in it and no two brands the same.

I'd read the labels in depth and if it doesn't say then keep looking.

They got it but it ain't cheap

Conformal coating on Samsung U32D970 monitor PSU, do I need to replace after repair?
        by psyduck
I have a Samsung U32D970 monitor from 2015 I pulled out of the bad hardware pile that turned on and then turned itself back off after a few minutes of use and refused to turn back on. The PSU has part number BN44-00786A, and I found a couple posts about one that had blown with damage to the MOSFETs and PWM controller - but nothing about intermittent failures. I started a new thread and said that I would refresh the solder joints on the board to see if it was just a bad connection and possibly replace the PWM and PFC ICs. I then asked what my next course of action would be after those steps. I...

Panasonic Plasma 2008 TH-42PV/PX series - Removing the coating from the Front Glass
        by tongshadow
I got this set for very cheap, it works perfectly but the catch is that the protective coating was damaged. About 45% of the screen had a green tint, you can see exactly where the layer changed colors to a blueish tone (that actually makes everything green).

"Ok, that's probably just the anti-glare layer" - I thought. So using a microfiber cloth and automotive metal polish I was easily able to turn it into a nice mirror.

Unfortunately, the damage was beyond this layer and everything still had a horrible green tint. I initially...

Wine and Beverage Cooler Control Board Repair Attempt
        by KYBOSH
Trying to a fancy Wine and Can Beverage Cooler which wasnt working.
        Model number AWBC242GGFD
Previous owner states that it needs a new motor.

When plugged up you hear a quick chime from the PCB alarm but it quickly dies away (trails off actually) and there is no sign of life from the unit at all.
I pulled out the main control board to give a look.

Fuses checked out okay. All diodes except one checked out. It was reading in both directions so I pulled it out of circuit and checked it again but this time it read good.

Whirlpool PACF212HP W portable air conditioner, upper fan only turns slowly.
        by spleenharvester
I just acquired this portable aircon, history unknown. Its behaviour is quite strange:
        • When turned on and placed into cooling mode, the upper fan (cold air out) just spins slowly. The compressor and lower fan do not run.
        • If the device is then placed into heating mode and then back into cooling mode, the lower fan and compressor kick in and start cooling, but the upper fan still only spins slowly.
        • If the device is placed into fan-only mode, the upper fan does not respond to low/medium/high speed toggles - just keeps running slowly.
        • Display and buttons all behave normally aside from the

Meaco Arete One / Deye Dehumidifier not working
        by CG2
I've got a dehumidifier that has stopped working. Plug it in, press the power switch, and it beeps 5 times. Nothing showing in the display (which is just two 7 segment displays) apart from the two decimal points flashing. The model is a MeacoDry Arete One 18L, which seems to be a rebadged Deye (all the boards are marked Deye). Here's what I've got so far (details in case anyone else in future should need them).

Starting with the power board. Mains power comes in at the red connector top left. The compressor is powered by the orange connector to the right of that and is switched by...
