Re: September equipment offer (u.k.)
Thanks for the link.
I've been looking around for a desoldering station, so this has come at just the right time. I see that the previous price was £84 (inc VAT). Still cheaper than Ebay & Amazon.
It gets good reviews too, so I'll be ordering one.________________________________________________

Re: September equipment offer (u.k.)
Thanks for reminding me that my Maplin badged soldering station is actually a Duratool, so I can get more soldering iron tips!
Now if only I could get round to fixing the temperature buttons so I can turn the heat down!Comment

Pretty fast delivery too. Arrived within a few days.
I ordered the spares kit with mine. Only cost £2.40, so thought it was worth getting at the same time to save on postage.
Havent used it yet, but I've got plenty of components awaiting removal.________________________________________________

Re: September equipment offer (u.k.)
While we're on the subject - can anyone recommend a hot air station?
Duratool have one big unit that's an iron and hot air, or they have a separate hot air station, or other brands? Cheaper is better, but not chinese enough to cause a 240v mains short and explode like the last one! Comments welcome before I make a mistake!Comment

by Roman555I'd like to offer an Acer IPIMB-AR Rev: 1.02A fullflash BIOS (cleaned ME region). The model is for Acer Predator G5920.
It is a model that is based on Intel Z77 PCH and doesn't have on-board graphics and video connectors.
I suppose it doesn't have any restriction about discrete graphics cards (I mean they don't have to be in a whitelist).
Please don't mistake this mainboard with a similar model with on-board graphics and based on Intel B75 PCH.
Jumper FLASH_OVERRIDE
default position: 1-2 - BIOS area protected
position 2-3 allows to dump BIOS or write...-

I've just been repairing some (very) old speakers with a loud hum that occurred as soon as you powered them on regardless if any actual audio is played through them. I work in a School so it's 99% likey that the Teachers have hardly ever turned the power off on them for well over 10+ years.
As you can see the top large capacitor on the right has a bulge on the top so defincately needs replacing. As the one next to it is exactly the same capacity and voltage I planned to replace them both.
What is your advice/opinion on whether or not on old(er)...-

by tony359Hi all,
I have an old Apple II monitor to restore and I do have a big variac. I've always wondered whether a variac is a good idea to power on equipment which has been unpowered for (likely) decades?
When it comes to analogue stuff, I suppose it's ok and I'm probably going to see the device slowly coming back to life with a lower voltage applied.
But I suppose this won't work for devices with digital components in it as they won't work unless the proper voltages are applied?
In case of an old monitor, it is safe/good for the monitor to...10-13-2023, 02:47 AM -
by FritterHi All,
For some background, I passed an OND in electronics in the 80's. Life took me elsewhere, and I've finally got around to using it practically. My interest is in vintage electronics.
My question is, other than a multimeter, what is the most used and useful piece of test equipment ?
