Is my soldering iron heating element bad?

I have a Chinese knock off soldering iron that I've been using for three years.

Suddenly the soldering iron stopped getting hot. The digital read out increases with knob turning but it always displays 006c

It's an 852d+ station. Couldn't find anything online for testing heating element so I did an ohm test across what I believe to be the sensor and input lines.

heat the tip with alighter or something and see if the readout changes.
chances are, the cable is bad - because your meter readings look like it's probably o.k.

I applied some current to the + and - terminals. The ceramic got hot and the reading on the other terminals changed.

I hope it's the wiring and not something inside the system

Did you really measure 2.1MEGohm across the temperature sensor? or milliohms?
I would suspect an bad temp sensor if it's that high and display is saying 6°C for a temperature?
Some info on 852D+ on Russian websites but no "006c" message

It was the heating element. Installed a replacement.

Question: Is there any need to recalibrate the station when a new heating element is installed or?

they probably arent calibrated to begin with.

                  Not need to recalibrate.
