My thinking is the poly would take most of the ripple due to the lower ESR but the lytic could still provide the bulk capacitance.

yes.thats what will happen.a lytic will also do a bit better cleaning up low freq noise/ripple.

although putting 2caps in lace of one doesn't need to be easiest thing to do.
i was putting(pairing) one cap on top of another(top to top. so to say) when i didn't have cap of proper value, and then pull the wires from top one to bottom one.
esr measurements proved that esr went down, just like one would expect with parallel resistors.

Thought about something like that before.
Also might help where you have long rows of small diameter caps and you can't find small diameter replacements in low enough esr.Mann-Made Global Warming.

I thought of that.
I would put poly (whichever cap has lower ESR) on the leads which should help compensate for wire length.
I found the right caps for the project that brought this up anyway now but the question remained on my mind so I asked for future reference.

- What you said makes sense to me but it's contrary to what they teach about caps in parallel and frequency response. When two caps in parallel aren't the same caps that 'rule' goes *poof* and the math gets real nasty.

I've got a bunch of Poly VVX-250 VOIP phones that work fine as kind as long as they are plugged into the wall wart. Recently I got around to install a couple of TP-Link 5 port POE switches that are added to the existing plain Jane 24 port unmanaged switch. Great!!! Finally I am able to ditch the wall warts from these phones making more space on the desk, plus I am gaining some badly needed power outlets. So I thought.
Plugged in the first VVX-250 into the POE switch, booted up no problem. Plugged in the other Poly phones and they start to boot anywhere from 5 to 15 seconds,...11-25-2023, 10:46 AM -
I do have several old pc motherboards which i recapped 10 year ago and some of those caps are bulged now.
I would like to upgrade them using solid capacitors. I do use them for testing and helping some alternative operating systems.
I would like to ask if such an upgrade can be done, what should i have in mind when replacing electrolytic by solid caps and if such thing exist, if there are caps list for old motherboards. I would have to figure out what caps needs each motherboard and then prepare a list to try to ask for them on some electronics stores. -

I have a dell XPS 9530 which had some liquid damage to the usb area. I replaced both the usbc iCs and not I can see 20v on the meter. But it does nothing and the 20v is not passing to charge the battery or turning on the board either.
I suspected the PD controller (usbc controller) but it will need to be flashed if I decide to replace it. I thought that if the usbc controller needs flashing then at least the board should turn on on the battery. I charged the battery externally and attached it to the laptop. Now the 11.8v is actually passed to the board I can... -

I'm probably going to ask a very noob question but after many readings and videos I'm still unsure on the answer.

Hello, I'm new to the group and to trying to repair a LCD TV. During the past few years, I've been collecting/repairing/restoring vintage personal computers (Commodore, Apple II, Atari, TRS-80, Texas Instruments, and Timex Sinclair). This has been my retirement hobby. Now I've gotten interested in trying to repair a LCD TV that I have and used regularly when working on vintage computers.
The LCD I'm working on is a Insignia NS-LCD019. I've downloaded the service manual that I could find, but it must be a different revision since not too many items in the service manual match the TV...
