    Wrong power supply ?

    Everyone,

I accidentally put a wrong power supply on my old Harddrive...
    I put 12V into 5V and 5V to 12V...
What could be wrong with it ?

    Any experiences ?

    Cheers

Could it be only ST2L05 3300 broken ?

Grab a multimeter and test... if you're lucky maybe you only blew a fuse or a protection diode.
Focus on 12v going to 5v trances in hdd... 5v in 12v probably didn't damage anything.

depends on the hard drive, SATA? PATA? Could have fried most everything on the board, or could have simply fried the regulators on board...

          it's PATA, I'm thinking my regulator is burned, it's ST2L05 3300...?
          Do you reckon...?

Probably some or all of the Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) are faulty ?

I'd be worried about the electrolytic capacitors on the 5V line, you can guarantee they will be no more than about 6V dc working, looking at the picture they do look alright.

If worse comes to worse, I'm wondering if you can swap the board must be the same type and number, I would guess the hard drive size is important too, that's the very last thing I'd say, other than that checkl what components you can on the 5V line.

                Edit:
Here's the data sheet for the regulator http://www.st.com/content/ccc/resour...CD00003344.pdf

It seems the maximum input is 7V (page 7).... so you could be right in thinking it's a goner.

Which one is the filter caps for 5V line ? any schematic for this board ?
I think 12V will kill those 5V caps....

Just trace the 5V pin to see where it goes to, there should be caps connected to the 5V power supply line.
Also check the resistance between GND and 5V line to see if it shows<10 Ohms.

I agree with budm..... but do check visually for cracks, leakage or any other damage, trouble is they may not test short circuit.

If you get stuck, find the supply input pin to the chip and work backwards to source.... no harm in routing out this pin and doing a check to ground.
