Interesting to watch . Years ago I used a few vacuum tubes , never thought too much on how they were made . I do remember all factory tubes had what was known as a getter ring , after pulling a vacuum they would fry what was left with high voltage .

Glass, steel, fire - that is true art. I marvel at the man's patience and how he doesn't fret if things aren't perfect.

Indeed really cool stuff. I can see myself doing projects like this when I get older. lol

I sure like to have one of that spot welding machine.

                  Re: Hand crafted Triode tube

I've seen a couple of online instructions on how to make a light duty spot welder from a microwave oven transformer.

The temperature control has to be well calibrated especially for aluminum. You might also try some government auctions. That is how the owner of my Dad's company use to pick up all his equipment.

It's nice being able to make your own amplifying devices. Now the curious question: has anyone been able to make homemade transistors? Now that is a feat I haven't seen yet...

There are some links in a google search for home made transistor. Here's an interesting pic.

That looks like a galena crystal transistor. I'd heard the transistor was discovered by people running crystal radios (galena) and noticing that adding a second-contact point could produce gain.

I've seen lots of galena crystal diodes and it looks like someone got a transistor working. But gosh I'd much rather use a homemade vacuum tube than those homemade transistors because they're much more reliable... merely shaking those point contact diodes and transistors and they'll fail. The homemade vacuum tube will survive.

Now compare a commercial vacuum tube and a commercial transistor... now which would you expect to survive after a small drop...
