Sony BluRay Player - Locks up

    Model: BDP-S3100

Will attempt to boot but gets stuck on logo screen. Sometimes it completes the cycle and I can power it on but it instantly freezes up again.

I've tried holding down the stop button while booting as I read it resets the resolution and 3/5 times it'll load doing it that way but again will freeze while in the home screen. Not sure if it's just a coincidence that holding stop even helps or just repeated attempts to get it going.

Would this be a firmware or hardware issue?

It's a great wifi enabled smart BluRay player and I'd like to get it going again. It's just a little over a year old

Re: Sony BluRay Player - Locks up

Spoke to a Sony tech and they had me try resetting the player by holding play and power buttons for 10 seconds.

That got it to turn off and attempt a boot but it still hangs. They wanted $80 for a replacement! Thing was $100 brand new.

Anyone know if this issue sounds like firmware and it's pretty much "bricked"?

I'd crack it open and look for bad caps.

I checked and the power board caps looked fine, don't have an esr meter. Main board had two smd aluminum electrolytic caps. Would those bulge if bad?

Those caps would bulge from the bottom if they were bad.

          Have you checked any voltages?

I checked voltages from psu to main board and didn't see any fluctuations. Only two voltages 5v and 12v.

Power input section? Am I looking for a specific chip? I'll try to post pics when I'm home

First, I would try the power input connector.

Here are some pics. It appears there's always two 12v present with unit on or off and they're both present and don't waver.

I measured voltage at the + side of the two smd aluminum caps one is 5v and the other 12v, they might be for the bluray drive though considering their location.

Not sure where to proceed from here.

So a friend has a similar unit without wifi but the power boards are identical, he let me swap them to see if there's any change and still giving the same symptom. That rules out any psu fault.

Any ideas what to try on the main board?

                                Hello,

I have a Sony DVD player with a stuck tray. It seems that moving or pressing on the tray makes it work.

                                Anyone knows why?

                                Thank you....

In the past i have had many helpful hints from generous forum members in diagnosing and solving issue related to most of my electrical things.

Fyi, i have been keeping this unit of Sony radio cassette player as the cassette belting has worn off but the radio has been working fine before. Recently, out of a sudden i found out i can't get any radio reception at all (no signal from FM,MW or SW band) except some buzzing warp noise from the speakers.

I opened the casing inside and checked for any dry solder, burned component or loose wires...

Diagnosed this TV as having a failed main board which I've replaced with one from a KDL 55HX850. They are (supposedly) the same board.

Being 'Smart TV' it requires a firmware reboot when you swap out boards such as T-Con or main board. It starts with a black screen and flashing yellow and green LEDS, indicating it needs that firmware boot. The procedure described all over the web is to put the software into the root directory of a FAT32 formatted USB drive and it should load that up once plugged into USB1 port. But not for me. I can see the LED on the USB chip flash for about...
