    Solid vs wet lifespans

I've been working on recapping an older motherboard which already had some seriously high-end caps onboard. I was thinking I would try to make the switch from electrolytic to solid-state to add longer life to the board, prevent leaks, ect. When I snoop around on digikey, it seems like the high-end electrolytic caps have rated life spans of something to the tune of 5000 hours at 105C while solid-state caps with the same uf and voltage ratings come in around 2000 hours at 105C.

I did see one "wet tantalum" that appears to be indestructible but it's also $133 per unit. too rich for my blood.

Shouldn't the solids be spanking the pants off electrolytics in terms of life span?

    Thanks!

In my older macs, Ive switched to tantalum on the motherboards and have had no problems, they had surface mount electrolytes that loved to leak, the tantalums are supposed to last alot longer but time will tell.

that's what I'd expect...maybe I'm reading my results wrong or I'm looking in the wrong places..

other than digikey, where would you go for caps?

solid polymer electrolytic capacitor go boom?
        by eccerr0r
Anyone had a solid polymer capacitor fail for whatever reason?

How do they fail? Do they explode, go open, short out, ?

How about for different reasons: forcing excessive ripple current, overheating, voltage too high, reverse voltage?

Just wondering about the causes for a potential shorted solid polymer capacitor... trying to debug a board that has a ~4Ω "short" on a track... it may or may not be a capacitor but was wondering what if it were...

        Cyberpower 1500AVR UPS repair
        by quickname
I'd like to start out by thanking this forum for providing the info to be able to repair my 15 year old CP1500AVRLCD UPS. Here is all the info I gathered during my trouble-shooting and re-capping.

Like clockwork, I've had to replace the SLA batteries every 4 years. It was about that time and the UPS was acting like it needed new batteries... randomly shutting off with AC present, not being able to charge fully, and poor runtime when AC was removed. So, I replaced the batteries but noticed that it was not charging properly.

I decided to verify that the batteries were...

Replace electrolytic cap with bipolar one
        by Adenitz
        Hello,
        can I use this cap:
        https://www.tme.eu/en/details/ues1h4...tors/nichicon/

Capacitor: electrolytic; bipolar; THT; 47uF; 50V

        to replace this capacitor: Electrolytic Radial E 47uF/50V 6.3x11 RM2.5 105°C Jamicon

What exactly I can expect to install bipolar electrolytic cap instead a regular one?

        Thanks.

        Picking caps for Antec SU-380
        by ajdrenter
In my search for a proper 5v heavy ATX power supply, I selected an old Antec SU-380 that I've had in storage for a long time. Opening the power supply reveals a couple bulged capacitors. I removed all the caps and made a map for myself. I found the datasheet for the PCE TUR series in this thread:
        https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=14159
It says these are general purpose, so I assume I can replace them with any general purpose capacitors, but I don't really know anything about power supply circuits or reading capacitor datasheets. Despite this, I've been shopping for replacements:...

        Nippon Chemi-con 100uf 100v BP electrolytic cap

        Hi all!

I just bought a pair of ADS L810 speakers, which I've heard are some of the best speakers from that time (late 70's) into the early 80's. I was super excited to test them out and hooked them up and I was very underwhelmed by the treble. The treble was awfully muffled. I've been doing some restoration work on 70's stereos and a couple of speakers here and there so I am really just a beginner. I do know that capacitors in speaker crossovers filter out the lows to allow only the highs up to the tweeters and mids. Inductors filter out the highs to allow the lower frequencies to...
