Please help me to identify this IC (THAC KHD) and Mini PC Mainboard

    Hi!

I got a defective mini PC mainboard which I am trying to repair.

I don't know the model of the mini PC and I can't find anything about this board online.

When plugged in with USB-C the board does nothing. But it drains about 1.7W.

I noticed, that one component near one of the two USB-C ports get's quite hot (>80°C).
Since I don't have the schematics, I don't really know what component this is. I assume it is some kind of USB-C power or protection controller.
It is labeled "THAC KHD", has 9 Pins and is BGA soldered. I desoldered it, to take some pictures.
After desoldering the board power consumption went down to 0W.

Does anybody know what this component actually is? How likely is it to break?

    Thank you very much!

On pcb under bga9 ic, have you short on some pins, shorted output? Check area arround hdmi, it look like component on data lines have hole in it... maybe some lightening strike product...

      Good find!

I guess your assumption is right and the board was destroyed by a lighting or something similar.

I desoldered the bad parts at the LAN and graphic interfaces and supplied power through usb-c. The power consumption increased to ~15W and after about a second, one die on the CPU exploded.
So this board is now for parts only..

Anyway, thank you for your help!

Too late for now, but use always a good power supply, where you can adjust the current, not only the voltage. And start with 100mA or so. Then you can find shorted parts without sacrifice the CPU.
