Connecting ground from different power supplies...

    Hi!

This is probably a dumb question but is it ok to connect together grounds from two different power supplies?

I've seen some schematics where they seem to do that but I'm not quite sure if I'm reading them correctly

Assuming this is ok, would it be ok to do the same with a battery and a power supply (I tend to think that it would NOT be ok...)?

Thank you very much for your help!

Re: Connecting ground from different power supplies...

If your planning on using 2 power supplies in your computer(one for board and other for drives) it is ok to connect grounds.

Also, the cases of the power supplies are connected to ground internally, so if you mount both of them in a chassie you don't need to connect the 2 ground wires as the case is doing it for you.

If you wanted to hook a battery up to a power supply, DON'T, there's too many different problem assosiated with it.

      Hi!

      Thank you for your answer!

What triggered my question are devices connected to the serial/parallel/usb port of a computer... They don't all use the current provided by the pc and frequently have their own power supplies (modem, printer, etc...).

I think that my confusion comes from the fact that for AC the rules are not exactly the same...

Have a nide day & happy holidays!

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

        Assuming...

        Asus Probook P5440UF-XB74 power issue
        by GLISIT
        Hi all,

TL;DR - this laptop is driving me nuts with the oddball power-related behaviors. Appreciate any insight you can provide!

I'm experiencing a power issue on an Asus Probook P5440UF-XB74. Although I've worked with electronics and computers for decades, this is my first attempt at getting into motherboard-level component troubleshooting. Any help the community can provide is greatly appreciated!

A few weeks ago I was using the laptop (on battery power) for a Zoom meeting. The battery was running very low (long meeting) but I wasn't worried about...

Vintage AT Power Supplies - Selecting Capacitors
        by iMic
        Hi,

Back after a long hiatus with some old power supplies that need repairing. I've recently picked up a couple of 386SX systems, two 486DX systems, a SiliconGraphics Indy and an iMac G3 that either have verified leaking capacitors in their power supplies, or are likely to in the near future. For the sake of simplicity, instead of tackling all at once, I'm starting with the 386's and one of the 486's.

The 386's power supplies are Seasonic SS4040A's, with caps that are visibly leaking, and 9 replacement caps per unit are required. Most appear to be from the Rubycon...

Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 - no power
        by PantherDave
        Hi all!

I'm trying to troubleshoot a Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 that won't power on. Motherboard model is M1007506-015. My priority is retrieving data, but the SSD is integrated so it looks like if I can't repair it it'll need to go to a data recovery company. I've done a little basic board repair before, but nothing this advanced until now. So please forgive my ignorance in advance. 😅

I found the boardview for this laptop in the forums here, and am able to open it on my PC with FlexBV.
