this stuff needs lots of research

        Re: lasers

        Looks really cool.

I want to build one at some point but I would probably use high speed 12-bit ADC and microcontroller over USB, so I could get higher update rates, or a 192kHz soundcard. It would be nice to see if solid object fill is possible at higher update rates.
Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

Does anyone have experience with with a high power lasers for engraving recommendions
            by sam_sam_sam
I am looking to buy at least up to a 30 watt engraving laser ( to use on a 3D printer format )
( 24 volt format preferred will use 12 volt format )

I looking for recommendations for a good laser head ( with heat sink ) with PWM control ( PWM controller separate from the laser is preferred ) I have googled this to find as much information as I can but what I can not find is good recommendations for just any brand

I do have the circuit for the interface to the 3D printer controller board for the PWM output for the input to laser ( optic sensor circuit ) which I...

            Helium-neon lasers
            by japlytic
Some of you may know that the early LaserDisc players and laser printers used helium-neon laser tubes, which have been replaced by strong semiconductor lasers which are more compact and efficient.

With this in mind, I became curious about whether early CD players, CD-ROM readers and even CD recorders, along with other optical recording readers/writers (other than LaserDisc players) ever used helium-neon lasers - did any of these devices use such lasers?

            Heatsink cement?
            by Retrorockit
I had been using Arctic Silver 2 part heatsink cement. But 1 part set up in the tube and I can't seem to find it anymore. What do you guys recommend for this. Dell doesn't put heatsinks on their VRM and I find they help when overclocking these things.
I've been told not to use Superglue because the vapors when heated can screw up the lasers in optical drives.

PS One (SCPH-101) disc reading issue
            by Technomancer
            Hello folks,

I have an SCPH-101 console with a bit of a strange issue. The unit doesn't want to read discs. Now that in itself isn't all that strange as the lasers in these things often go bad. What is strange, however, is that when I take the laser assembly from this unit and put it in a known working console, it works just fine. Also, when I try the laser assembly from the working unit in this broken one, the disc spins and the laser moves up and down but doesn't really do much else.

One thing I noticed is that it doesn't want to read even audio CDs until I turn the...

            Windows 7 Printer?
            by Hondaman
Right now, I have a Canon PixMA IP-4300. I can still get cartridges, but they are getting harder to find. I am about to get some refill supplies, and a device to reset the chip inside each cartridge.

(Of course, if the "ink overflow tank is full" sensor is tripped, I will have to hack/reset it or junk the printer immediately. Old printers, like old cars, are more likely to have sudden catastrophic failures. I accept this.)

Should I get a printer now, since Win 7 drivers won't be provided for printers any longer? (Note: Long after Win 7 is too unsafe to go on...
