• Re: What's the bottleneck with x58?

For X58 there are unlocked Xeons that support faster 1333 memory, and have unlocked multipliers. Typical overclock is about 4.1GHz on 6 cores 12 threads. W3680,W3690 are the unlocked CPUs
Throttlestop software can access power and speed settings.

If you don't want to overclock the X5687 Xeon 4C/8T is the fastest locked CPU in the series with 3.89GHz turbo speed.Re: What's the bottleneck with x58?<... X58 there are

Look into one of the unlocked Xeons for that chipset. The Xeons support 1333 DDR3, the i7 don't. W3680 is the favorite.
Then overclock it to about 4.1GHz with Throttlestop software. The power settings are a little tricky. This works even on locked down workstations.
With an unlocked system the fixed multi X56xx CPUs work also with BCLK increases.

• Re: socket 775 forever... no, no, no...

I got into LGA775 in the Dell BTX era. I'm still running them.
the G41 chipset supports DDR3 also and can run 8GB in 2 slots.
Optiplex 360 to 380 MB swap is cheaper than the 4GB x64 DDR2 RAM modules.
I got an X5470 Xeon running in one with a modded BIOS. 3GB GTX1060 was the sweet spot.
https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/27732113
Dell T3400 is a BTX workstation with X38 chipset. Hidden support for 400fsb, 16GB DDR2 capacity, dual GPU and onboard RAID0. XPS420 is about the same with 1GPU. I've...

FBDIMMS open a memory channel for each module. This gives huge bandwidth possibilities. But each module has it's own memory controller, and this adds huge latency, power and heat issues. Intels Skulltrail 2xCPU unlocked Xeon systems used it, and were considered just about useless for gaming due to this. The more you take advantage of the bandwidth, the worse the latency gets. Add in some overhead for ECC and it's as bad as it gets. The 4GB FBDIMMS are the reason why 4GB DDR2 Intel RAM is so rare. Very few machines used it back then.

As far as 2 slot G41 MB goes I've found it's usually cheaper to get a DDR3 version that supports 2x4GB DDR3 Modules. 4GB DDR2 modules do exist. But non FBDIMM, and 512x64
configuration are hard to find, and very expensive. I've run X5470 Xeon,8GB DDR3 1066, and GTX1060 3GB on a G41 Dell Optiplex 380. I save my 4GB DDR2 for systems that support 16GB of RAM, although I stop at 12GB to save some money.

JBW sounds interesting. But I harvest my expensive Enzotech copper heatsinks from my old projects. I think the JBW would win that arguement.

Heatsink cement?

I had been using Arctic Silver 2 part heatsink cement. But 1 part set up in the tube and I can't seem to find it anymore. What do you guys recommend for this. Dell doesn't put heatsinks on their VRM and I find they help when overclocking these things.
I've been told not to use Superglue because the vapors when heated can screw up the lasers in optical drives.

• Dell XPS420 @4.32GHz

I finally quit screwing around with Optiplexes and lit the fuse on an XPS420. QX9650, 12GB DDR2 800, GTX1660TI, 2x 120GB SSD in RAID0.
150x50mm Delta 2cpu workstation fan, and XPS720 BTX heatpipe cooler.
13x333 1.425V. and holding about 70*c. Dell wait too long to speed up the fan. and I'm just using a theram; pad so far. Lapping, TIM, and tuned fan profile are coming next.
CPUZ base score 270/1049
OC score 390/1495
I haven't connected it to the internet yet so no benchmarks.

• Re: Anybody here still uses Win 7?

I read the EULA on WIN10. They own your data.
I just fired up an old Dell desktop. I t had 2 hdd in it. Win7 64 Pro, and Win10. It seems Win 10 hides everything a couple layers down. It also assumes you want their Cloud service, Mail Client, and to shop at their app. store. The Win 10 drive Had Office and lots of other nice stuff. But Win10 itself just annoys me. Constantly.

• Re: Universal LGA775 VID mod question.

First try out it didn't work so well. No smoke this time. But no computer either.
I'll have to get a 2nd rig going. My daily computer is a good candidate for this once I get the bugs out. But not for trial and error. I guess I'll have to try the VID mod the old fashioned way and see what I discover. It looks like one of the MIL Spec. Optiplex XEs is going to get a workout. maybe I need to go straight to spoofing the MB VRM and be done with it.
I suppose Linux is as good as anything else for these hardmods. At least I got to clean...

• Re: Intel SDE AVX and SSE4.2 patch

I may be responsible for the T3400- T3500 confusion. I own a couple T3500 (as shown) But I'm actually working my way up to a T3400/XPS420 project when I get through maxxing out my Optiplex 380. 266/333fsb tapemods for the Opti 380, and 400fsb on tape for the X38 Mid Towers. The Optiplex XE is lurking in the background of all this too. The T3400 and T3500 can be overclocked with Throttlestop software and unlocked CPUs already.
The T3600 with AVX support is ripe for it but hasn't been tried yet.
None of my stuff is ATX. I just buy whole...

I don't bother with 1156. I go for the LGA1366 with 3 channel RAM. The Nehalem based Xeons were called Bloomfield. Whole Dell T3500 are typically $80. I've actually picked them up for as little as $20, 3x Optiplex XE and a T3500 for $80. When I pointed out that the RAM shroud was missing, and it was part of the cooling he sold it to me for scrap value....

Everyone forgets the unlocked Nehalem Xeons that are cheaper than the QX9650. Or even the X5470.
W3580 can be found for about $30. Adds HT support and DDR3 1333 x3.(DDR3 x6= 1066)
Maybe prices have gone up some since I got mine.
W3570 is listed as unlocked also.

• Re: Intel SDE AVX and SSE4.2 patch

Dells require X64 low density modules. The cheaper X128 versions ran on AMD CPUs. 4GB low density is rare and expensive because Intel went with FBDIMMS for servers in the 4GB size. Some of the aftermarket boards accept them, but Dell didn't until the integrated memory controllers took over. Optiplex DDR3 is the same way. It's cheaper to convert an Opti 360 to a 380 than to buy 2 sticks of 4GB x64 DDR2. You almost always have to buy new. There never were very many of them back in the day. 4GB DDR3 used is bettter for Dells because new ones have...

• Re: Intel SDE AVX and SSE4.2 patch

My move up from the Opti 380 will probably be a QX9650 Dell XPS420 with 16GB DDR2 and a brand new GTX1660TI OC card.. I've had it to 4.33GHz already. But a 400fsb tapemod to base clock of 3.6GHz, and a Throttlestop overclock on core 0,1 will probably get a bit more than that.

Here's my T3500 with W3690 and Trifire HD6990/6970 setup.
I can get the lid on it with a macho 120 fits with holes drilled for the heatpipes to stick out. fan is a Delta AFC 1512DG 150x50mm 260cfm. (same as my Opti 380)
