I Need Advice on the purchase of a Multimeter

Hi i am new to the forum and new to electronics, i am attempting to fix my first monitor and i want to purchase a multimeter that will do the job.

Could anyone give me some suggestions on a multimeter that i can use for testing components. I would like to know what functions i am looking for in a multimeter for doing general work on boards. I would like to purchase a meter of ebay (convenient) that is in the low to mid range.

So if anyone could let me know what type of meters there are to buy and what there pros and cons are it would be appreciated.

A cheap meter would be ideal atm ( under 50$ ) but if its not going to be good for the jobs ahead ill spend more.

I've been using a freebie bag stuffer shirt pocket meter from an Introduction to Electronics seminar I got 3 years ago. I used to see these at the flea market for $2.

Unless you're going to later "fix" heart monitors or passenger aircraft systems don't spend more than $20.

Now if you're going to get into soldering/desoldering much. Spend the $ and get a good used station or better yet a vacuum station.

im sure this question is fine posted here. its such a general question im sure it could be posted anywhere.

i bought my meter off of ebay used for around 50$ it is a fluke that i carry around with me most places it is easy to find fun clamps and probe leads for because it is a name brand.

you need to look for 2 things fixing monitors. for the meter you need to find is a true RMS meter. these are far more accurate and far more stable. when measuring a voltage regulator that is +- 10% and it is 1.8v the difference between 1.86v and 1.78v can really help you when diagnosing these things.

the second thing is a ESR meter. these are usually cheaper to buy seperatly from a digital volt meter. most meters come with a cap check in the form of F (farreds). although this will tell you what the cap can "hold" it needs to be out of circuit to get an accurate reading and it doesnt "load up" the cap. also most cap checks only go to 100 uF (there abouts). its not uncommon to come across ultra low ESR caps of 6-10,000 uF in modern monitors rendering the cap check on the VOM useless.

          hope this helps

Modification of a Fluke multi meter that uses three AA batteries to use a 14500 lithium ion battery
              by sam_sam_sam
I have had with regular AA batteries that leak this meter is expensive new I already replaced the battery battery clips once and the same thing happened again and I am tried of so it is getting modified to accommodate lithium ion batteries that are the same size excluding the positive terminal and removing the battery clips I will have enough room for the BMS protection board

I going to put 3 lithium ion battery in parallel with the BMS protection board and a way to charge the battery externally and heat shrink the battery pack and use a JST connector so I easily remove the battery...

              MacBook Air A1932
              by TOMÁŠ
Hi, I've never worked with a MacBook before, so I need some advice.
I have a MacBook Air A1932 (820-01521). When I plugged in the charger with an amp meter, it showed 19.7V and 1.9A, which indicates that it's charging, but when I press the power button, it doesn't turn on. So, I disassembled it, disconnected the battery, and plugged in the charger again. It showed 19.6V and 0.04A, and pressing the power button had no effect—no current draw at all. Then, I removed the motherboard, connected the charger again, and got the same results. I took a multimeter and checked all the coils, and everything...

              Short Circuit tester
              by Tarot Superstars
              Hello.
I have seen a short circuit tester made with 3 * 9V batteries, a voltage limiter component and a resistor connected to the probes of a multimeter.
The theory is that the meter becomes sensitive enough to read very low resistances and the lowest resistance to ground on a circuit is likely to be a short circuit in that area.

My multimeter isn't normally sensitive to very small resistance, but when I put a 1 mega ohm resistor...

Magnum IA.100 Amplifier Switches on, No Output, Possible Input Side fault?
              by flibidy
I have here a Magnum IA.100 which belongs to my parents.

The unit powers on & when the relay kicks in, you get a pop from the speakers (this might sound weird but is usual behavior for this amp). However, you get nothing coming through it from any of the inputs & no pops and crackls from any of the controls.

Because of the sound from the speaker when the amp turns on I have assumed that the output section probably works but I could be wrong & I'm not sure how to test that side of things further.
