Re: Let's See What You Got!
Well I was supposed to put up a couple of pics of the workshop, and I really did mean to tidy, but last year was not a good tidying year and this year looks no better lmao.

Re: Let's See What You Got!
After the fire department gave me two, three tickets then I worked hard to clean up, this is my best result. I think I need to go to a neurological hospital for treatment. Can somebody please help me?
But I am not the worst. Once I went to an elegant lady's house repair TV. Her house is full of garbage, I'd to walk on 1 inch deep papers, bags on the floor. When she spoke to jaw drops me, she didn't feel anything wrong. Her attitude and appearance are still so generous and noble.
I think I got a friend.Last edited by capwizard; 03-04-2019, 08:55 AM.Leave a comment:

Re: Let's See What You Got!
So, I figured we all are wired to the same tune! I take great pride in my work station and bench. I know it's not the most impressive but it's mine and I love it! So, I figured, you guys feel the same about your bench and work space so, LETS SEE IT!!!!!! Take a look at what I'm working with! Can't wait to see what you guys are rocking out with! (it's a little dusty...lol!).
Please don't take this posting as me bragging about what I have. I'm very humble and I don't think my workspace is anything to write home about. But I learned a lot about setting up my work area by seeing other peoples shops and asking questions. I think posting your work space would be great to a beginner to open up conversation as to why, what and how you set up your shop the way you did. Also, all of us geeks appreciate this kind of stuff!
These pictures are of my home office, I also have a warehouse that I store a lot of the bigger items. As you can tell from the pictures, it's not a very big room so a warehouse was important for me to obtain. Especially when it's a friend of the families and is willing to let me use it for free! lol!Leave a comment:

Lol.
You need to get the balls of steel

Also, one time I was removing a big audio connector from a motherboard in. Instead of using hot air or similar, I took a bunch of leftover balls of solder and clumped them together into 1 big ball, then used that to cover almost all of the pins on the audio connector to remove it. As soon as I pulled the audio connector away from the board, the hot solder fell thought the holes as well. Luckily (again) I was working on a bench and I didn't have my feet under the motherboard. If I did, I would have gotten burned with a lot of solder. The big solder ball I was melting was about 1-2 cm in diameter - a lot of solder, basically. When that thing splat on the ground, it made a nice sheet of flat solder about 4 cm^2.Leave a comment:

I have never burned my balls with solder, but I do have a scar on my leg from a splotch of solder that fell. Now, I always make sure that my legs aren't under what I am soldering. (That burn hurt like heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllll!)

^ Hasn't happened to me. Then again, I have a mini bench table I built myself that usually has all of the tools I need on it so everything is just an arm's length away from me.Leave a comment:

Re: Let's See What You Got!
The problem of working on your lap is that going to reach for tools means having to set the workpiece aside... annoying. I really need to get some real workspace ...Leave a comment:

Re: Let's See What You Got!
I always work on the soft carpet floor in my room and regularly solder in my lap. As a result, my back hurts a lot less than when sitting in front of a bench. The only thing that hurts sometimes is my hips, usually after 3 to 4+ hours of sitting. Just snap them at the end of the day, though, and all is good again. Back pain can be a bitch, so I do try to avoid it.Leave a comment:

Re: Let's See What You Got!
I really need to set up a bona fide workbench... right now I just have a mess everywhere, sticking equipment wherever there's space... not pleasant reaching for tools, etc.
Not to mention my workspace tends to be my lapor floor when working with high voltage... Not OSHA compliant at all! Just not enough table space...

Yeah, I always find it kind of funny when I see your location is Fairfax.

I still have a lot of work to do on my workshop out back, but will post a few pics soon. For now I have some teaser photos, from the days when my shop was also my bedroom. Re: Let's See What You Got!
I'm not by nature a clean bench person, but am forced to be such at work. At work, security rules don't allow me to bring a camera into the building, so no pix of my boringly empty bench. But here are datasheets on the two instruments I use most often: Agilent U1253A handheld DMM (the datasheet is for the "B" version, but what I have is an "A"); Tektronix 3034B oscilloscope. The OLED display for the DMM means it must be recharged every day or two (possibly better in the "B" version?), but the accuracy and resolution are wonderful (and needed when trying to set a ~4000V regulated output to +/- half a volt or so!). Tek's TDS3000 series came out in the late 90s and is currently being sold new in the "C" or "D" version. It is a freaking workhorse! My "B" version has a 3.5" floppy, but the "C" version has a USB port for using a flash drive. When I worked at Boschert I used a Tek-adapted Polaroid camera that used B & W instant film; capturing a single-sweep waveform took some interesting "gymnastics". And if a flash drive just isn't good enough, the TDS5000 and TDS7000 series oscilloscopes have built-in Windows PCs that control the 'scope and can be ethernet-connected to a network. So you can capture your waveform(s) and save them directly to your preferred network drive. I used one of each of those at my previous employer.Leave a comment:

Re: Let's See What You Got!
M,
Gravity is not my friend, so your right about that.
On the other hand I do make some very good stuff.
The guys like my APRS radios, got about 45 of them out in the world.
What part of VA are you in. Home is Herndon, near Dulles Airport.
When people comment about the status of my work bench, I refer them to the devine example.
The astroid belt is a mess also.

Re: Let's See What You Got!
All,
This posting I will regret.
My shop is truly too small for all the stuff in it.

Most of what I do is two way / ham radio related. So lots of little things and cables.
Later.

by shamsudeenHi all, I just need to know that, can i use SMPS type power supply to test and short circuit detection on a laptop motherboard?
I saw 95% of repair guys are using only Linear bench power supply. linear bench power supply is pricy, thats why i planned to get one SMPS supply.
i know that in linear power supply the noise will be very low comparing to SMPS supply.... -
by EniaroHow do you bench test a series X? I was planning to find a defective PSU to use its connector, but before I go about doing this, I was wondering if there's any bench PSU to the series X connector adapter available06-17-2025, 01:46 PM

by Geeker007Hi All,
So my friend was visiting and he wanted to use my solder bench to solder on some WLED circuit board. My laptop was open on the side for RAM upgrade. I know my mistake.
So while soldering he had too much solder on the soldering iron tip and he just shook off the soldering iron on the table itself to remove extra solder on the soldering tip and it landed on the motherboard of laptop. He then out of fear tried to remove it using solder wick and did more damage by removing some components as well. So here I am with weird situation.
I have not tried putting... -
by CrystaleyesHi all.
Looking for some help regarding the workings of this unit.
Some time ago I picked up a digital bench power supply from the local flea market here in Rio. It's a 'Sincler SPS 3015/D' which I imagine is 30V, 1.5A 'Digital'.
Even though it would turn on and show a display, it wasn't working, and no matter how hard I have looked, I've found no reference let alone any kind of schematic. I imagine it is from the late 70's or early 80's? I can only assume that all the components are to the original specs although it had clearly had prior work done so it 'is' possible... - Loading...
