Does anyone know if there are metal film resistors of 1% fake? Many offers on ebay from sellers in China and Hong Kong selling kits for a very low price.

EEVBlog has two very good recent videos where he compares brand name quality resistors with their Chinese counterparts... Unfortunately, when he got to comparing the off-brand metal film resistors, his DMM software crashed... -

1% resistors don't come down a different assembly line.
They have Chinese girls armed with DMM's [ones made especially for grading] that measure them as they come off the line.
The ones that are within 1% go in the 1% box.
The ones that are within 2% go in the 2% box.
... And so on..

I can vouch for Sun-Pec. Ordered 10 each of 170 values 0.25w 1% metal film for like $19. Paid with paypal, got to my house in like 10 days from Hong Kong.Comment

That works out about $25 NZ
At 1.8 cents per resistor I can buy 1700x 0.25w 1% metal film resistors from Farnell for $30.
$5 more but the shipping would be much faster, and the quality probably better.

Thats the whole reason why I ordered from them to begin with... I'm getting into the tinkering thing and I need the widest range of resistors on hand that I can get my hands on with the tightest tolerance. I'm sure there will be many many values that I will never ever have any use for. But what I'm thinking is that a couple years down the line, who knows....I might just be needing that one oddball resistor value and hey I will have it! If that happens the price I paid for the entire assortment could easily pay for an entire order consisting of one resistor value from mouser or digikey.Comment

Hey everyone,
I'm currently working on a mid-70s Sharp Electronic Digital Clock Radio, Model FY-70CH. I found the service manual online, printed it out, and have been studying it for a while. My main reasons for tackling this are: (1) I want to learn electronics and figured I'd start with something I had on hand, and (2) I want to fix its issues. Right now, the radio sounds awful, has about 5V DC at the speaker terminals, and the alarm time setting doesn't work. But I'm not asking how to fix these problems.

Problem
This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached.... -
I had a few 5% 1/4W carbon film resistors blow up on me during my lifetime and i have always replaced them with the same type. Now i am wondering if metal film resistors could be used to replace them in sensitive circuits like switched-mode power supplies.
I understand that metal film has better reliability with age and less noise and 1% tolerance, are any of these elements going to introduce any issues though?
To sum it up, is there any advantage to using metal film resistors over a carbon film in PSU's? -
Hi all, Im working on a board, that my customer brought to another shop, and smeared liquid metal all over the board.
The laptop powers on, then shuts off. I noticed traces of Liquid Metal near the edge of the CPU, but I fear some maybe underneath.
Has anyone ever tried Ultrasonic cleaning, or compressed air to remove or agitate the liquid metal?07-11-2025, 01:47 PM -
Hi All - I'm in the midst or reprogramming the bios on my gen1 Surface Laptop Studio and I accidentally blew away 2 resistors nearby the bios. I don't have another board to measure values of the missing resistors and schematics aren't available, bbut the bios is a 6x5mm Winbond WSON8, W25R256JWPQ model. The traces are conductive to Pins 3 and 7 (IO2 & IO3 respectively) so I have reason to believe they are 10k pull up resistors since IO2&3 pins are used for Quad SPI instructions.
Does anyone with more knowledge, and experience than I, know if this is the case?
