Can IGBT be replaced with MOSFET?

I am repairing the motor controller of my neighbors washing machine after it decided to self destruct once it had completed its cycle.

Theses motor controllers control a 3 phase permanent magnet motor
has 6 IGBT transistors two for each phase one upper and one lower
but has a common fault either the upper or lower short and when the controller turns the other half on... boom!

So I am wondering if I can replace this IRGBC30FD2 with a MOSFET.

I pulled out 2 IR840 out of a newer controller (phase3 model) not realizing this controller (Phase 1) used IGBT not MOSFET, So put the Mosfets in replaced fuse powered on, all good but no break or drive. Powered off checked .22Ohm current sense resistor it was open replaced it now the machine has break and drive but seems to be missing a lower or upper due to it is missing a step.

As the drum is rotating around 5 steps are good but one is missing, I am guessing one of the mosfets are not working (or drive circuit damaged) or one
of the IGBT transistors are open.

Doubful. IIRC Mosfets can't handle the voltage an IGBT can.

It would be interesting to see the schematic of this arrangement. You don't say if you checked the motor for shorts first - first things first. Second, how did you determine when the IGBT's fail? I'm assuming you tried several of them and are now thinking that IGBT's - the OEM parts - are not up to the job??

The short answer is no, a MOSFET is not a drop in replacement for an IGBT.

From the quick description of the problem, it sounds like you skipped a few steps in troubleshooting. If the motor has first been proven good, the next step is to replace the smoked drive parts and re-evaluate. Keep in mind that the controller itself might have failed, especially if the devices need a dead-band in the switching drive, which may have disappeared.
      Is it plugged in?

Re: Can IGBT be replaced with MOSFET?

The motor has been replaced, the one that was in there has 2 Ohms across all phases meant to be 13 ohms.

The reason for mosfets is the cost of IGBT's at $10 each .

The two of the igbt's on the Phase A are shorted across all pins.

fisher&paykel don't release their schematic's they have a swap policy at $200 each.

The user was with the machine when it self destructed just finished spin once the drum gets below a certain rpm it uses a electronic brake my guess is by turning on the lower transistors.
        I'll be replacing them with IRG4BC30FD @ $7 each

The controller board itself is faulty, not the power output.

What is this in regard of?

I think the transistors were damaged from low impedance of the motor.

This post is to thoroughly address all your questions.

This One failed when the user was waiting for it to finish spin.
The blown drive elements are common in these machines from washing to spin as in this case.

No just put in mosfets from one of the newer controller not realizing this older model uses igbt's instead.
No if anything id say these are over rated.

Motor was bad 2 Ohms instead of 13.
Will have to order new parts and see if missing phase fixes itself.
In my newer machine the mosfets have a dead time in them for this purpose/reason.
My machine killed a pair because of water from leaking pump. Others have had it happen from moisture damage to the hall sensor/rotor position sensor.

My description of the missing phase maybe due to a open IGBT yet to test the other 4.
Voltage wise the mosfets should be getting enough gate voltage.
otherwise one of the gate drives has died.

How do you test MOSFET in laptops ?
                by Jane
I tried to use this method:

                Testing an N-channel MOSFET:

Step 1: Discharge the Gate (turn off the MOSFET)
Place the black probe (COM) on the Source (S) and the red probe on the Drain (D). The multimeter should show no continuity (high resistance or "OL" – open line).
Then, touch the black probe to the Source (S) and the red probe to the Gate (G). This discharges any stored charge in the Gate, turning the MOSFET off.

Step 2: Charge the Gate (turn on the MOSFET)
Now, place the red probe on the Gate (G) and the black probe on the

                hello.
have this acer Predator Triton 300 PT315-52 LA-J891P that have no cpu main power after phase mosfet short. its resistance is so low i cannot determine if it is shorted or not. can i use somethimg like load to test phase power? like remove coils and wire some resistor or wire another board cpu?

ACER ASPIRE A515-52G CAN ON BUT NO DISPLAY, NO POWER AT VCC_GT
                by Bonaventure Vigil
                Dear All,
Please really2 need Help on this Acer A515-52G Motherboard Compal EH5AW LA-G521P Rev: 1A.
At first this laptop can on, keyboard light on but no display. Open the motherboard, found out the PQZ3 Mosfet and PUZ3 ic near it burn. Refer picture below. Then I replaced both. All the power rail 3.3,5,1.2, 1.35, 0.8V have power back after i turn on the laptop except for the VCC_GT rail. Voltage at Power Supply showing 0.000A before turn on, after turn on it became 0.5 0.6A. Seem cannot boot and still no display. Then I replaced the PUG1 and mosfet, but the VCC_GT still no power....

                Asus P4C800-E VRM issues
                by c_corr
This board had the initial fault in VRM with high side Mosfet from PWM1 (phase 1) getting very hot. It also had the VRM caps quicly heating up in 10-15 seconds after power on.

This board uses mext ICs and Mosfets in VRM:
                - ADP3180 PWM controller - in 3 phase mode
                - ADP3418 as Modfet drivers
                - High side Mosfets STD38NH02L (from ST)
                - Low side Mosfets STD90NH02L

Some of the symptoms were very similar with the "Dead Asus P5P800-VM" in this forum.
I had the sawtooth voltage on Vcore too this was probably the cause of the Vcore caps...

Nescafe Aeroccino, still fails with new Motor (red flashes only once)
                by juergenb
                Hi,

i am asking for some Help.
I have one of these Nescafe Aeroccino (Milk Frother) things with a bad motor.
The Motor didn´t start anymore and internet is full of users just swapping the motor for a Mabuchi RF-500TB-12560.
So i got a few of these from Banggood.

I swapped the motor and now i have a new fault condition.

In a working Frother you would press the start button, it will light red and work for a few minutes.
If you press longer it will light blue and just mixup the milk.

With the new Motor it just starts...
