    Good Price On Desoldering Braid

Well I just ran out of my 100 feet of desoldering braid had it for about a year.

So in a pinch I went to Radioshack and picked up their braid and got ripped $3.99 for a mere 5 feet. Unfortunately Radioshack must have switched their OEM for braid because unlike their older braid that I'd used this braid was very coarsely woven and tended to unravel when you used it.

I pushed through with it until it was gone and decided to look for a sufficient quantity of some good braid online.

I ended up purchasing 100 feet of SPC technology braid for 45 bucks plus shipping from Newark a year ago. The braid was nice and worked well. But this still seemed like way too much to me so when I ran out I did some searching and I found a good deal this time.

Here it is I figured I'd share it:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=280375213973

The braid is made in the USA by Techspray in Amarillo, Texas. 50 feet long 2.5mm wide.

If you just solder every now and then this can be a lifetime supply .

I have no relation with the seller but I am a happy customer.

    100feet of 2.8mm costs about 22$.
(offcourse, prices here are usually 2x those in usa, so...., and yeah, i only got 1.5 or 3m packs(one wide and one..))

What is this for exactly? Usually I just heat up the iron to desolder, what will this do?

      Please pardon my ignorance.

      Thanks

Desoldering braid is put over a soldered joint you then place your iron over it. It wicks the solder into it via capillary action.

I personally can't stand solder suckers they just don't work for me. The only time I use them is if I have to remove lots of solder which would waste too much braid. I then use the braid to remove what the sucker couldn't.

Using it takes some practice like learning how to solder you have to learn how to desolder with it. But once you know how to use it you won't go back.

Suckers never worked well for me either.

I think I will give this stuff a try. Thanks!

You'll love it and the Techspray stuff has the best flux on it so it works better.

The flux on the Radio Shack stuff isnt as good.

Re: Good Price On Desoldering Braid

Re Suckers, whenever I empty mine I wonder about all that lead. The powder that comes out is extremely fine, like talcum powder, and it's mostly lead. When you trigger the suck and the air whooshes in, in goes the lead. When you recharge it though, the air inside the chamber is pushed out the front, probably with an invisible cloud of powdered lead. Gotta wonder.

Braid avoids the problem, but make sure you get the kind with flux in it. Solder likes flux.

Unless your nose is right on the board snorting the air from the sucker I doubt anything will come of it.

Yeah this braid is the good stuff with rosin flux none of that no clean crap. Just got 2 more rolls so I have 100 feet in reserve.

I once bought solder with no clean flux by mistake the joints looked horrible. It looked like I was soldering with a lead free solder the joints were all cloudy normal for PB free but not for Sn / Pb.

Can't imagine it's any better at removing solder than it is applying it.

                  powder?
                  what powder?
what kind of solder is that?

never saw anything like that....some fumes, yeah, powder? no.

also lead's melting point is much higher than that of solder, so i doubt you're seeing lead.

Re: Good Price On Desoldering Braid

I occasionally get tiny chunks of solder when dumping out my solder sucker bulb and rare occasions when I use it.

Thought that's what he was referring to. It is possible it could be rosin flux residue it's usually a goldish color when undisturbed and white when scraped off something.

now it seems to me he's reffering to solder when he says "lead".
and he thinks that this "lead" is somehow vaporized into air, and that he'll inhale it.

far from saying those fumes are healthy(heh) it's still not "lead in the air".

more like "rosin in the air"..heh

but a small fan blowing lihghtly on the spot will remove that risk....

that's what i used when i had much stuff to solder.

Re: Good Price On Desoldering Braid

each puff of fumes= one pack of cigarettes worth of tar. DO NOT BREATHE IT!

thats what the man who taught me to solder said.

Do not breathe it is certainly correct it's not good for you.

But the tar cigarettes analogy couldn't be anymore incorrect.

The worst rosin fumes can do is cause occupational asthma. This mostly only happens to factory workers who spend hours and hours every day breathing it in without not knowing the risks.

Just keep your head clear of the smoke or use a fume extractor with a carbon filter.

                            i wanted to ask
                            "what tar?"
                            hehe....

there are some peculiar things in rosin, but i doubt tar is one of them...

i prefer a pump - you just need to know how to use one.
