Soldering station for around $150......thoughts anyone?

So it turns out the "45W" soldering iron I bought is actually 25W. This little "pee shooter" is pretty much worthless as tits on a chicken for electronics! There's no way I'm de-soldering a heat sink or anything large. The capacity recovery and tips are terrible!

So the plan: spend $150 on new soldering equipment. I'm looking to maximize what I can get for the money and get reliable equipment that works good.

I'm sure there are plenty of good soldering stations at that price point....but before I buy anything I'm wondering what you all would buy if you had $150.00 to spend on your first good soldering equipment?

    Thanks for your input everyone!

something using hakko T12 (or chinese clone) cartridges.
there are many, but the cartridge is the important factor because it combines the tip, sensor and element into a single piece.

you can spend less than $50 and still get a good handle, base and probably a dozen assorted tips!

btw, what are you using now??

I bought 2 of these back in 2012 for $150 each, and still going strong, one is still new in the box.

i hate combination units - nothing but trouble when you need to fix them.

that company does sell a T12 based station though.

not the cheapest, but still good.

I have the Hakko FX888 (analog). I use it sparingly since I rarely do repairs now, but with a chisel tip (1.8, 2.4 or 3.2mm), it can desolder easily.

I used to think digital soldering stations were cool, but now I'd rather have something with an analogue controller and preferably a linear power supply. Much easier to repair.

Unless you're working to very tight tolerances and you're re-calibrating your iron every time you swap tips etc, then having the precision and accuracy of a digital readout (assuming cheap digital ones are reliable anyway) is pointless, in my opinion.

I'd take an FX-888 but not an FX-888D, even just for the fact that the user-interface on the FX-888D is awful.

These are all great ideas! Like the simple easy to fix approach but I'm leaning towards a digital unit. I caught that YouTube video from EEVblog, the conclusions drawn there really steer me.

Having equipped the workshop some time ago with a range of Pace soldering equipment I would thoroughly recommend checking out some something like a PS90 sensor temp or inteliheat and controller both can be had if you look around for around your budget or better if you check out the second user market. If you prefer a cartridge system them the TD100 is a good step, the cartridges are more expensive than the hakko t12 copies but you get what you pay for. Its a completely modular system with a range of inter compatible hand pieces. The Weller WPS81 is a good system as well, less flexible though.

Modification to a ZD-987 desoldering/soldering station using a external switching power supply
                    by sam_sam_sam
I have been working on this concept for quite some time now with limited success but recently I found a switching power supply that is setup for the voltage that this soldering station needs to operate at however it also needs part of the secondary circuit from the original switching power because you need several voltage rails

I once tried to get a ZD-915 desoldering station to work on a 18 volt battery power supply but unfortunately things did not go well but I did find a work around but I might try this idea again but going at a little differently more about this another time...

What soldering station should I purchase for 900M-TJ-I tip?

                    hello.
A few months ago,I have purchased 0.1mm Soldering Iron Tip of below aliexpress link,But I noticed that It is totally impossible to use this 0.1mm iron tip in the T12 soldering station
                    https://ko.aliexpress.com/item/4001275635593.html
Is there any good soldering station which is possible to use 900M-TJ-I tip and have inexpensive or reasonable price in aliexpress?
                    Any reply would be appreciated.

Recommendations of quality soldering station and (separate) hot air station
                    by caprider
                    Hey,

I'm looking for some recommendations of a decent quality soldering station and a separate hot air station. I'm just a hobbyist, so even if (ultra)premium tools are not required, I still want some good tools. They should be available in Europe.

I now have a TS100 and some soldering irons and looking for some better tools.

                    1. Soldering station, budget around 200-240€
JBC BT-2BWA seems to be a good product in the budget.

                    2. Hot air station, budget around 200€
Up to now I've found ATTEN ST-862D to be a good option....

KSGER C245 Soldering station PSU 220V only?
                    by mkbehbeh
I purchased this soldering station when it was on sale at amazon. It had a slew of one star reviews, but the price was low enough that even if the controller and PSU were toast, the handle tips and stand were worth more than the price. All of the reviews mentioned that the unit was either DOA, or died on the first use. I looked on Aliexpress and the first clue was that KSGER still sold the 220V version of this station, but all of the 110V versions had been discontinued. I figured That there was a problem with the 110V on the power suppply and the controller would be fine.

                    I am...

Yihua 992DA+ Hot air gun and soldering rework station, burnt mark
                    by Peter_1402
                    Hi Everyone,
I bought a Yihua 992DA+ hot air gun and soldering iron unit from a used market.
                    1. Soldering iron works great
                    2. There is a burnt mark on the hot air gun handle.
I am a bit concern by the look of the melted plastic. I opened the hot air gun handle and took some readings with a multimeter.
Heating element ~ 75ohm. (Similar reading taken from a spare heating element that came with the unit.)
Thermocouple ~ 1.5ohm. (Similar reading from the spare heating element.)
Reed switch tested ok with a magnet.
From the above test, I can conclude...
