Re: ESR 0.6Ω capacitance -15% absolute must change?
After comparing with a good PSU. I see that the bad one is not starting (when connecting PSON and PSKILL to ground). The good one starts the fan, LED turns green and all output voltages are there, without needing a load.
In stand by I have several different voltages on output PINs:
PIN / good PSU / bad PSU
PSON 4.9V 7.9V (and bad one varies a bit)
PSKILL 4.9V 7.9V (bad one varies)
SB5 0.4V 3.3V varies up to 22V
A1 0.5V 1.6V
A0 0.6V 1.6V

Re: ESR 0.6Ω capacitance -15% absolute must change?
Useful questions, thank you. I will dig more for the answers.
Looking for the IC that does PWM I found several op Amps and a PIC.
Is it possible that this PIC is actually performing the PWM: PIC16F819?
Everything is pretty dense with a secondary vertical board with PIC and OP AMPS. I'll have to take down again 3 heat syncs with MOSFETs and double diodes to track pins and see if I missed another IC. Almost all components are covered by the 3 T-section shaped heat...

ESR 0.6Ω capacitance -15% absolute must change?
I have one (of 3) hot swap Supermicro/Ablecom PWS-0050 SP382-TS server PSU that is mal functioning. Supermicro IPMI reports it as bad and led is orange on.
I took it apart tested transistors, diodes, capacitor but haven't found the problem. I'm a beginner.
In standby I have 5VSB, but not 12VSB, nor 3.3VSB. Here is the PSU Pinot: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?1816351-Supermicro-PWS-0050-SP382-TS-Power-Supply-Convert
There are 3 x 400V, 100uF capacitors on the primary side.
They measure:

Re: FCL30A015 diode reverse biased shows 35 Ohm, 0.05V forward. Is it gone?
So with a 21W load (car light bulb) on 12V the diode only passes the right way. With zero Amps leaked when reverse biased.
I think the multimeter is misleaded because it leaks some current on low Amps when reversed biased.
Also, on 12V with a 1K resistor it actually leaks 0.01 A when reverse biased. It's not zero Amps like I've written before. Above I mistakenly tested another component.
So the FCL30A015 look ok and seem to be used as ORing for hot swap.

Re: FCL30A015 diode reverse biased shows 35 Ohm, 0.05V forward. Is it gone?
I did test them with a 1k resistor and 32V from a lab power supply.
According to the PSU they take about 0.03 A when forward biased and 0.0 A when reverse biased.
So according to this test, they are working ok.

Re: FCL30A015 diode reverse biased shows 35 Ohm, 0.05V forward. Is it gone?
I am not so sure any more. I have 4 of these diodes in the PSU and all read about the same.
If I create a circuit with my lab PSU at 32V and a 1k ohm 50W resistor (the smaller resistors that I have are too low power) with the diode in series it only conducts as it should: with minus terminal in the middle. And it does not get reverse biased - as it should.
Maybe I am missing something about these diodes?

FCL30A015 diode reverse biased shows 35 Ohm, 0.05V forward. Is it gone?
Hello,
I am troubleshooting a power supply.
When measuring a FCL30A015 diode it shows 35 Ohm when reverse biased and 0.05 forward voltage.
See attached.
The datasheet does say "Extremely Low Forward Voltage Drop": https://www.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/pdf/94301/NIEC/FCL30A015.html
But 0.05V seems to low.
Is it gone?
Should I perform some other test?https://Hello,<br /> <br /> I am tro...m when reverse...

chaper alternative to CL1850 CLIFF (mains quick connection)
This looks like a handy little tool for safely connecting to wires to mains while testing some device you're working on:
https://ro.farnell.com/cliff-electronic-components/cl1850/connector-mains-quicktest/dp/658716
Or CL1860 CLIFF - image attached.
But quite expensive for a plastic and some metal.
I couldn't find a cheaper alternative.
Do you know one? Or what other name can I google?
Thanks.https://This looks like a handy litt...ng some device...

Re: Inductor or resistor
Thanks. I didn't know coils have the inductance value color-coded.
Based on lines it's 1mH.
Can I replace it in this power supply with a coil of 1500uH, 100mA, 25Ω?...

Re: Inductor or resistor
And how many ohms does it have?
I can’t decide if first and last colors are red/brown (maybe orange?).

So they are both based on “How to diagnose and fix everything electronics” (attached). But what's their main purpose: coil or resistor?...

Inductor or resistor
See attachment.
This blown component is connected to the output of a bridge rectifier on a SMPS.
It looks like a resistor (it has colored marking lines), but it is marked as L1 on the PCB, suggesting it is a coil. Which is it?
This is a very basic and cheap SMPS which I am analyzing for learning purposes.
Thanks.
PS: don’t worry, I know there are about 330V after that bridge rectifier IF powered and I take the necessary precautions....Last edited by caprider; 01-19-2022, 03:49 PM.

Re: Desoldering station/gun above ZD-915/474A++ ?
@sam_sam_sam thanks for the extensive review!
I am leaning towards ZD-915, in spite of it being a budget tool, sounds almost fun to maintain and repair it. "Fun" because it will not be heavily used and it will only be used for my hobby.
This might be a blasphemy here, but I have to ask: why replace low grade caps BEFORE they fail. Why not just wait for them to fail and replace them then?

Re: Desoldering station/gun above ZD-915/474A++ ?
I read that 474A++ gets clogged easily and the tips oxidize quickly. How’s your experience been?
If I had to choose one of those, I’d choose ZD-915. But it has the hard-to-remove-tank problem and especially the heating element not extended to the chamber/tank, making it clog easily. (I do like how it looks, though).Last edited by caprider; 01-16-2022, 01:44 AM.
