Oscilloscope Poll! How many do you own?

Well, there was a thread somewhere on the proper number of oscilloscopes someone should own. There's also the collector that probably has too many, including myself... then again I only have three:
The VuData analog, a Tektronix analog, and a Tektronix Digital

So what do you have? Don't have one yet? What are you waiting for!

Dangit someone shoot me, should have separated analog/digital singletons. Oh well, curious of what people use. All digitals now?

How about options "more than one, all digital" and "more than one, all analog"?
I have two, both of which are digital.

Re: Oscilloscope Poll! How many do you own?

Yeah it was late, and a whole bunch of ill conceived poll options were made. Options of channels, bandwidth, oh so much more...

I guess Tektronix did a fairly decent job making the digital work very similar to the analog scope (there's so much that could be done with a digital that just doesn't make sense on an analog). Yet it's still an early primitive digital.

However so far it looks like a lot of people got the right idea - the minimum number of scopes any one person should have is 2... mainly, use one to repair the other when it breaks. This may only apply to analog scopes though?

Re: Oscilloscope Poll! How many do you own?

the reason you have more than one scope is they are too heavy to post - so when you get a new one it is an addition rather than a replacement.

you cant sell them for much on ebay for the same reason - postage is a killer

Re: Oscilloscope Poll! How many do you own?

It is high but not ridiculous, though I currently can't think of why I want to sell one of mine.

The VuData is the smallest of them all, I suppose I could sell that other than that chop issue...and that it has sentimental value as it was used to repair many things, including the one of the Teks.

Yes the two Teks are huge, but they have their own advantages (4 channel vs DSO)...

So why have more than one other than inability to unload?

Re: Oscilloscope Poll! How many do you own?

I knew someone's going to ask about the hybrids (like the Tektronix 2232 and all its cousins) and PC (or other attachment)-based. Both count as digital if they digitalize the signal to a digital signal at some point.

Kind of annoying with the 2232 and other related scopes that the analog bandwidth (due to traditional 3db losses) significantly exceeds that of the digital bandwidth (due to sampling rate). I guess my 2440 is even worse: no analog mode at all, but rated for 300MHz with 500MSa/sec which doesn't make much sense.

BTW, anyone have/use a CRO that doesn't have triggers? :o

I was wondering about my old vacuum tube scopes and why they never had a really stable display like my current scopes...

Blast! Too used to modern (trigger) conveniences!

Yeah, my first one, the Dick-Smith Q1280. It has no timebase selection, just several different sweep frequency ranges (all free-running) and a potentiometer to adjust them...

It has an external horizontal sync input, but I've never used it.

That's weird, there is a sweep range knob on the manual, and it does have internal/external sync ("effected" (sic) by INPUT voltage) so it must have some sort of primitive trigger - there's a wire coming from the vertical amp to the horizontal sweep circuit...

Now whether it works well enough to qualify as a true trigger, I don't know...

Thanks for those.. unfortunately the 4D10 bears no relation to the 10A .. completely different circuit and layout.. and the other is actually the 4D25.. about 5 years later 25MHz with a tripler and again totally different psu arrangements.. why they have made such a glaring mistake at that archive is beyond me.. it even says clearly 4D25 on the first page!

Yesterday I paid for a download allegedly the right one.. only to get the 10A .. and 3 other places have also tried to sell me the A B and 14D10.. Why is this particular one so difficult to find??.. I'm going to have to take a long cold look at this scope.. It stands me at very little, (boot sale.. owner had photo of both traces working on his phone) but, with a new set of caps, and who knows what else.. it's rapidly going to become cheaper to buy a rough known good working one and cut my losses on this one.

I tried to figure out which section this belonged in, but imaging is the one that seemed closest. I have a tektronix 5103n(D11) and the horizontal line is always slowly creaping down. Even if I have it probing a voltage. I tried probing a 9V battery and it would show 9V at first then very slowly keep moving down. Is there an adjustment I can make or is the scope in need of reapir? Thank you.

Hi, I have a Denon AVR-X3600H I'm trying to repair. I have no electronics repair experience but I have a multimeter, service manual and a will to fix it (https://device.report/m/d5de8c00e617...f63147aba9.pdf)

Everything seems to work except for no sound even through the pre outs. However I will get sound using Zone 2 pre outs.

Only digital symptom I can tell is it will soft lock when in the Speakers/Test Tone menu and be unable to adjust +/- db during the test tone.

I've followed the trouble shooting guide, audio check...

How not to Damage an Oscilloscope
                                          by Tarot Superstars
                                          Hello.
I have jut got my first analogue oscilloscope. An Isotech 620 20MHz.

I want to learn how not to damage it, and I found instructions on the internet obscure.
They talk about ground, earth, floating ground, this, that....
But they don't actually say anything anything useful so far.

                                          I want to know:
Don't connect exactly this to exactly there or it blows up.

For example, I am tracing a signal from a function generator in an audio amp, or testing for voltages in different parts of a circuit.
I want to know what not to connect...

lowest current galvanometer/analog meter (passively powered!)

Most analog meters are actually current driven - a current is needed to deflect the pointer full scale. They can be lots of different values. There are ones that can take several amperes to swing the pointer as they have internal shunts.

On the other hand there are many that are rated in microamps for the intent that they draw as little power as possible from the devices under test. Some are 1mA, 500µA, 200µA, 100µA, and the ubiquitous 50µA frequently used in analog VOMs. There are even 20, 25, 30 µA and even down to 10µA. Been collecting a bunch of different ratings and...

                                          Dynamco analogue oscilloscope
                                          by Evets
I have recently acquired a Dynamco D7100 analogue oscilloscope without a user manual. As this is the first time I have owned or used an oscilloscope I would like to try and find an instruction book. The manufacturers no longer hold any information and a Google search only found one site but when I downloaded a 'service manual' all I got was gobbledegook. Any help would be gratefully appreciated or even pointers to a generic manual where I could learn more.
