    scope probe

since we are on the subject,

i have a couple of probes with big bulky plugs on the end.
they are blue - i think they are from an original fluke scope-meter.

anybody know what the big bulky plug is about - a filter / transformer?

And the all too common: photos?
It may very well be some sort of filter, but it may just be a big handle.

I noticed (and as expected) my cheap p6100 probes behave differently as I change the frequency from 500Hz to 5MHz, seems underdamped at low frequency to overdamped at high frequency. So I really don't know how I'm supposed to set the probe, almost seems they need to be retuned every time time/division is changed!

      Re: scope probe

i doubt the p6100's are any worse than top-name probes for the types of scope we have - given the age of the design etc.

inc a standard plug for size comparison.

        All,

Some of you have helped me in the past and I am very appreciative of all the help! (I have fixed TVs/Stereos/ and other small appliances with your efforts...Thanks so much!!!

Today I went to a local HAM Radio Festival. It was one of the smaller ones in our area. My stepfather is the HAM operator. I tinker in electronics but am a Software Programmer (27 years now).

I was looking for a few odds and ends for some electronics work I have to do for the household/farm. Typically these type of shows have the grab bags or a electronics vendor...

N channel mosfets testing as P type?

        Working on a smps.
Using Fluke 115. Red probe in red socket. Black probe in black/common socket. Meter set to diode mode.
Removed a pair of mosfets marked 1L02AB FDP
        26N40 from the circuit.
The pair of Mosfets are still screwed to the single heatsink. Mosfet printing facing me.
I did the test where I short the left and center pins. I put black probe on right pin and red probe on center pin. I get OL. While keeping black probe on right pin, I put red probe on left pin and get OL. After a few seconds I move red...

Need advice testing a samsung power supply board with scope
        by repair-it
I am attempting to test a samsung power supply board to verify the pfc ic is working. I am powering up the board with my isolation transformer. The board turns on fine but when I attempt to connect the ground for the scope probe, it trips out the isolator. I was taught not to 'float my scope' so I am wondering if I should test without connecting the ground lead or would that be asking for trouble? Not sure how else to test, I don't have a portable scope. I could plug direct to mains power but that would bypass the safety factor.

How do you test MOSFET in laptops ?
        by Jane
I tried to use this method:

        Testing an N-channel MOSFET:

Step 1: Discharge the Gate (turn off the MOSFET)
Place the black probe (COM) on the Source (S) and the red probe on the Drain (D). The multimeter should show no continuity (high resistance or "OL" – open line).
Then, touch the black probe to the Source (S) and the red probe to the Gate (G). This discharges any stored charge in the Gate, turning the MOSFET off.

Step 2: Charge the Gate (turn on the MOSFET)
Now, place the red probe on the Gate (G) and the black probe on the

Macbook A1466 dies when charger disconnected
        by echothegamer
        Hello all,

Working on my wife's 13' Macbook air. It's been in a box since she upgraded but I figured it could be good practice.

        Details:
        Macbook 13' A1466
        Board (820-3209-A)
        Battery OEM 7.3v 50Wh 6700 mAh (020-7379-A)

Pictures below of Boardview and schematic...

I don't know how to test the voltage on a MacBook battery. I just assumed it had an enable pin but the best I could read was 300 something mV poking around the battery connector.

It's an older model and it is very likely that battery has become...
