    vixio vx42l hdtv10a

My tv will not come on. When plugged up word vizio glows orange, but when you press power it flickers white for a sec the goes dark. It makes no sound like it is trying to come on and the screen never comes on. No internal lights or anything. Not sure if it is the power supply or what. What do I need to check first? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First you need to pull the back and check the power supply for bad caps, and while your in there take some quality pics and post them on here using manage attachments.

Try and get a bigger picture of the capacitors underneath that heatsink. A good side shot will work. look at pic to see area i'm talking about. Do you know what to look for in a capacitor?

May have to unplug the connectors to get a good side pic.

No problem. I will have to do it around 7:00 when I get home. Thanks

well, I don't really see any visible caps that are bad. It all depends on if you want to get the tv back going quickly or if you want to try and fix as cheap as possible. I found a board on ebay for $65 which is pretty good. You could probably re-cap the whole board for less than 15 bucks but not sure that will help you. Check the obvious fuses on the board also if you haven't done so yet.

I see 1 bad cap on the left side of the first picture. they look bulged to me especially the second one. They are probably in parallel so replace both . If it was me, I would replace all.

the black 470uf 16v rubycon looks a little bulged to me too but it's hard to tell really. I thought there was several bulged in the first picture but looking again in the third pic, they really looked ok. I'm with you on the caps. If i was going to replace one, I would do all.

If it were not for the "flicker" you mention I would think it to be a main board problem.

I just had a Nov 2007 VX42L sent my way. All four 470uf 35v caps on the inverted boards are toast, and they show signs of having been replaced before. I believe I have some Panasonic FM's around I'll use, but I wonder if someone might help me determine what the last tech considered valid replacements... the last repairperson installed Samwha LT series. They are stamped 105c, but I can't for the life of me find any specs on the LT series on the web?
                        Thank you.

PS - There is also some bulging on the largest filter on the main supply, a 16d x 25h Nichicon 470uf 100v. I know I haven't any 100v caps in my bin. Any replacement suggestions for it? Panasonic NHG?

Joe, i would replace these 3 caps first and see what you get. also check it over for krappy solder while it is out.

if ng we will have to start checking voltages to attempt to isolate the issue. From what your symptoms are, sure sounds like a cap issue.

check this thread to see what examples of bad capacitors are. Generally, you will see the top "domed" or the borrom rubber will be popped out... in some cases the sides of the capacitor will be bulged too.

                          https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=424

However please keep in mind that a capacitor CAN fail internally/electrically and not show external symptoms..

If there are caps on the other boards please check them over as well.

                            Wow...
One usually assumes the bad part you pull out will be the same value as what you'll put back in... My VZ42HL main supply board doesn't look like the pictures you all are posting here. Could someone please tell me the value of C241? It's one of the caps under the heat sink on the right side of the supply. It's the cap closest to the center white connector. I have a bulging Nichicon 470mfd 100v 85c in that hole and a solder flux mess around it's PCB connections.

It think someone substituted their own value...
Is C241 supposed to be a 1000uf 35v like the one directly behind it?
                            Thank you.

check the inverter caps as well they are under shields on either side of the screen. they will swell the power board supply caps when they go.

I am working on the VO42LHDTV10A myself, it may use the same set of inverter boards as your, so inspect them also.
                                See pictures here:
                                http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/y...VO42LFHDTV10A/
The board should be modified if they are the same as my.
