Sony KDL-60EX500 LCD TV Intermittently No Power

    Hello,

I have a Sony KDL-60EX500 LCD TV that Intermittently has No Power.

Happens randomly. when it happens the power supply relay makes 2 clicks and when the set is working fine the power supply relay just makes one click.

when the unit is working fine the psu is putting out all the proper voltages

when the unit is in the fault stage its not putting out voltage to the tcon board the meeter reads 0, but when unit is working it reads 12.

I thought maybe psu fault so I purchased another psu, but same problem.

when the fault happens the unit will not even power off with the remote or the side buttons the power led just stays green but black screen the backlights are not even lit.

there has been some times where it turn off fine and the led turns to red standby but in the morning its like the tv turns itself on the led is green but no image

the set has no blink codes

    Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Sony KDL-60EX500 LCD TV Intermittently No Power

come on guys someone has to have some clue here.

Did a bit more playing around and I unplugged the tcon and turned the power on. it does the same thing, but doesn't do any blink codes it is to my understanding that its supposed to throw a 5 blink code for a missing or faulty tcon, so by me unplugging the power to the tcon should make the set throw the code and it does not.

Does that give anyone a clue?

Did you download and look at the service manual and the training manual? It has lots of info regarding to testing voltages and flow charts.
It is also hard to help without seeing any pictures of the TV, boards, etc.

Here are pictures of the main, TCON and PSU in that order.

The mainboard picture is of the front and back side of the board.

Any idea how I could start to find out which of these 3 boards is the fault?

Start reading page 12 of the training manual.
"when the fault happens the unit will not even power off with the remote or the side buttons the power led just stays green" This seems to indicate fault in the main board.

Thats what I was leaning to as well. it still could be the mainboard even though when the fault happens there is no image or back light at all?

what happens is you plug the set in then I get the red standby light no blinks or anything just steady as it should. then you press power and the green led comes on as it should and the psu relay makes 2 clicks instead of just the one like its supposed to and there will be no image or no backlights or anything. then if you try to turn it off via remote or button it just keeps staying in the green like its on and wont turn off. you have to unplug it from the wall outlet. when the unit is in fault mode i get all voltages from the psu except for the two 12 volt lines going to the tcon they are at 0 when the fault happens

when there is no fault the two 12 volt lines from psu to tcon has 12 volts on them. the tv does this problem intermitent.

"it still could be the mainboard even though when the fault happens there is no image or back light at all?" The main board when it is working it will send out lots of control signals to turn on the main power supply, the backlights inverter circuit, the 12V feeding the T-CON, without those signals, the TV will just be dead with standby power supply running only (standby power supply is an always on, it runs the minute you plug the TV into the outlets, it is used to run the processor on the main board). You need to look at all those signals when the TV is working and stops working so you can see which signal is not present.
You should read basic LCD TV troubleshooting guide also (it is under my signature)

I have. when the set is not working its missing the two 12 volts from psu going to tcon.

when set is working all voltages from psu are as they should be.

                        Bump.

Can anyone shed any light on this one. I'm throwing boards at it with no success. have already thrown a psu at it and a main and same problem. someone in here mentioned its probably the main well I threw a main at it and still didnt work. unless the boards i'm getting are faulty don't know.

At least when I got the psu it worked for a little bit then did the same problem again after a day. Putting in the main did absolutly nothing.

measured the voltages again on the psu and like I said both 12 volt pins on the psu labeled tcon 12v is at 0 volts, but should be at 12 i am getting the 3.3 standby voltage when I power on the set its supposed to get 3.3 volts i oly get 3 volts don't know if thats an issue. this unit is supposed to blink when there is a fault yet I could disconnect tcon, inverters etc and no blink codes at all.

please someone help im $300 in already

In case anyone is interested I have solved this issue. It was the infrared sensor board that detects the remote control commands.

Quick question kdl60EX500 one day stopped working. This was right after a power outage. I did some testing and when the TV turns on I get the Sony logo the backlights are on and sound but when the Sony logo disappears the TV goes dark but backlighting still remains on. I was thinking a bad T-con board problem is this board is expensive what are the odds of it being this board thanks in advance.
