dell has been selling computers with ubuntu for a couple years now, nothing new about that. they are not mainstream but that is not news at this point.

              read the page.
              it's full of anti-windows stuff!

              6) Ubuntu is safer than Microsoft® Windows®

The vast majority of viruses and spyware written by hackers are not designed to target and attack Linux.
              that's just one example.
              they also push OpenOffice!

well, they are right... microsh!t sucks!

now if only they could make linux drivers for dell-badged lexmarks... that would be nice...

modern lexmark = NO LINUX DRIVERS... they used to make red hat drivers, but now they only support M$... my mom's x8350 is a linux paperweight...

most modern lexmark is crap anyways (except the corporate stuff)

open office usually comes with ubuntu, so you get one you usually get the other

                        fuck lexmark.

i'v never had any problem with Epson all-in-one's on Linux.

                        does any of it work?
                        can sane scan with it?

                          Re: Dell

my epson rx600 (i think) worked, but the ink was overpriced and the ink level method was pages printed based not actual ink remaining. overpriced shit. that, and my mom needed fax.

the dumb thing won't even scan if it is out of ink... they got 'ya screwed....

i have a brother mfc 420cn that she refuses to use... i like it myself...

i also like my canon bjc85 (nice mobile unit) and my HP laserjet 1012...

epson dont count pages, they count pulses to the peizo in the head.
you can play with those counters using this:
                            http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml
                            (not for Lin unfortunatly)

i get clone cartridges for what works out at about $1.20 each.

yeah... but it is a non-replaceable printhead. the privious owner used 3rd party... what a PITA to clean out... my luck with 3rd party has been nothing but very, very, bad.

I read that it was PAGES... i have 95% full cartridges that read up as EMPTY to prove it.

besides, why go back to it when my brother mfc420cn is so much better, it has fax, a built in LAN server, it takes up MUCH less space, and has both a flatbed and sheet fed scanner. all i have to do to make it work in 'buntu is install the "extra brother drivers" lpr and cups packages... not to mention mine was only $15 at a thrift store.

I've got a Lexmark Optra S 1855 laser (dual paper drawers) parallel interface (shared on the network), bought it second hand back in like 2001 with a bad toner cartridge for $20.00. Replaced the toner cartridge in 2001 when I got it then again in 2006, and its printed about 1000 pages a month since I've owned it, which is now 9 years. Its saying 'low toner' on the display, so I ordered another cartridge, but I'll run the existing one until it quits printing.

The point being, I print over the network from my mac and have printed on it from Linux machines as well (fedora and ubuntu), never had any problems making it work and play nice with any OS yet. That's been the best printer I've ever owned. I have a Samsung color laser in the house. Makes nice pictures, but samsungs software completely blows. I won't own an inkjet printer. I hate them....they're slow, unreliable, and most of all, you get assraped so hard on ink!!

that is an old lexmark... iirc it uses postscript, which automatically makes it linux/mac os x friendly.

too bad we can't afford a color laser all-in-one... we were lucky on the twin tray b&w laserjet 1012 ($10 at a thift store; almost full toner; owner thought it was a win 7 paperweight-- it isnt!)
