well all my supplies last years - many years.
but i cant stand fan controllers.
    a fan should move air - that's it's function.

i either remove the controller completely - like in FSP's where it's bolted to the heatsink, or bypass the output transistor on others like Antec.

so my caps run nice & cool.

Re: What's the worst brand of PSU?

I Don't like PSUs that have the fan running at full speed all the time. They're too noisy. A temperature controlled fan is nice as it still provides enough cooling to prevent the PSU from overheating, but it reduces the noise
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

you cant hear the psu on my machines,
it's drowned out by the 120mm jobs blowing over the harddrives.

i had several of them in the shop where instead of a plastic sheet under the board they used the silver hercules labels.iirc the silver pigment is conductive!

But when you turn the computer off, the fan goes off but the 5vsb is still on - and generating heat.

I agree. Not only that, but the fan also wears out pretty quickly at full speed (especially if it's sleeve bearing). Fan speed controllers are a great thing (of course only if they are made to run the fan at a proper speed).

The other problem with the fan at full speed all the time is that more airflow =more dust. I don't think sleeve bearing fans are that bad, as long as you oil them before they fail.

Re: What's the worst brand of PSU?

                      i dont have any dust,

i keep positive presure on all my pc's by using bigger input fans than exhaust fans.
the input fans have filters on them.

btw, if you want to reduce noise you should make sure your psu/case usins wire guuards and not "pepperpot" or some othe crap holes in the case.

i cut the metal out of some cases & psu's and fit wire-guards to reduce air resistance.

The Antec sucks canal water for sure, but the Bestec also takes the system board and drives to Hell with it when it dies.

I vote for Besttec. I have personally work on 100's of emachines and the powersupply ends up killing the board. So you end up replacing the mobo + powersupply.

DEER B350ATX PSU - tips on making it safer and "better"
                              by kotel studios
                              Hi,

Since it looks like my excellent power PSU chances at living are now close to zero, I decided to give a shot at upgrading this DEER B350ATX PSU.
At first glance it looks like, well.... a shitty cheaped out DEER garbage (cause it is). Although it does have an LF 1250CD00 filter transformer (at least I think that's what it is) 😆
Tiny heatsinks, small transformators, single-pole ON/OFF switch. You name it.
Now since this one works, I'd like to know how can I make it safer and better (besides burning it with napal 😃). My plan is to make the switch double-pole...

Hello friends, I've got a nice toy to play with - it is an HP RP7800 All-in-one POS system. I got it for free and it has one problem - it turns on very rarely, and just for a few seconds. After that it dies and doesn't come on if I don't leave it unplugged for at least 2 hours. I've repaired motherboards before, this is not my first one, but problem with these types of faults is that everything you check on the board will usually be fine. This is the case for me here.

I dissassembled it completely, and got my hands on the motherboard. Model No. is PIQ67H/Higgins 11047-I 48.3GD02.011....

A1466....worst blown PCH I have seen
                              by reformatt
Check this out for a catastrophic failure of the PCH on this 820-00165 board.

PP3V3_S5 had a 11 ohm short to ground and the PCH +1.05V coil was dead short. Took off the heatsink...didn't expect to see the cap completely shattered.

There was some bug crap and liquid ingress over the board. There was something stuck to that 2.2 ohm resistor on the 1.05V buck converter. But the real damage I believe was the crap on U7501, as those pins were for the feedback for PP3V3_S5.

Initially I thought this was a board destroyed by bug shit, but the trackpad is also not...

CPU: 3/0GHz 4C/4T Intel Core i5-7400. Nothing exciting here, got it off eBay for $80.

Motherboard: Gigabyte B250M-Gaming 3. Because I had it floating around and the model number contains gaming so it must be better, right? Free.

Storage: 240GB WD Easystore SSD. As far as I know, it's just the Best Buy rebadge of...
