I don't understand the minds of some recappers....

So I'm nowhere near as active here anymore as I used to be over a decade ago but that's mainly because I've been lost in a sea of subcontracting and NDA repair jobs. This one however really takes it.

My current workload is recapping a single model power supply. Nothing special, just a non-ATX form factor 150w thing with an extra 24v rail and no PWR-ON and PWR-OK pins. They are all about 20 years and sure enough, many still have their original OST blown out or out of spec but beyond a few common issues like an underrated resistor that BBQ's itself and a transistor that likes to roast they seem pretty solid.
Other units however have been previously reworked by some other subcontractor at another company in another country between 2011 and 2017 according to their previous rework stamps. Their workmanship is great and they have addressed much of the above mentioned resistor issues but....they recapped hundreds of these power supplies with Teapos....

I'm ordering new Panasonics, Rubycons and Nichicons by the thousands and at those bulk levels the price per cap is something like fifteen cents each on average. What kind of amazing crack was the last place smoking to think it was okay in the 2010's to replace one known awful brand of cap with ANOTHER awful brand?? Was Teapo that much cheaper??

I'd question why they were serviced in the first place!

If its a piece of COMMODITY kit, chances are, its close to obsolete before it shits the bed. Why incur the labor costs (assuming ANY quality parts are free) to put it back into service for 1, 2, 5 years -- so it can be that much MORE obsolete?

If it's a "collectible" or a NONREPLACEABLE piece of some larger system, then I'll spend the time to troubleshoot and repair. E.g., I've had to refurbish some big iron because it hosts some enterprise sstems that would cost millions of dollars to reinvent on more modern, ubiquitous hardware.

But, if I can replace the entire device, that's by far the cheaper option!

I bought a brand new 2019 silverstone 450 SFX power supply last year it came with Teapo SC on the secondary, I wasn't thrilled about it, however Ive seen Teapo SC last along time in PSU and I have seen plenty of the SC failing also, its just luck of the draw with Teapo. But anything mission critical or for a friend for sure I would only use panasonic, ruby, nichicon, NCC etc.

Maybe they where hoping for an easy follow-up job a couple years down the line?
And now you went and ruined it for them

Re: I don't understand the minds of some recappers....

some recappers are just plain nubs.. nuff said... case in point: on junkbay, ive seen plenty of stuff thats been recapped with more of the same junk caps. they say they did that to keep it period-specific and for consistency's sake to look consistent with the other caps on board! yeah right! pushing junk with more junk!

while others are complete utter nubs they recap with caps the wrong size from the original and dont exactly fit. one example on junkbay: Club3D ATI 9100. the original silkscreen on the pcb is for 10mm diameter caps but the nub recapper put 8mm diameter caps on it and teapos to boot... on the reverse, u can clearly see there arent dual through-holes on the pcb for fitting 8mm and 10mm diameter caps. only 10mm diameter caps. the recapping job was terrible also, leaving burn and scorch marks on the back of the card.

those nub recappers ruin the name of all good recappers and give recappers a bad name!

MacBook Air A2337 (820-02016) - 5V, won't turn on - please help me understand why
              by mkdj
              Hello everyone,

About me, my goal and the equipment I (don't) have:
I am brand new to this forum, and I am eager to learn about repairing laptops. I have an engineer background although I haven't done electronics for a while. I have watched several Youtube videos in the last two months, trying to understand how to diagnose a faulty motherboard. I have a USB-C Amp meter and a classic multi meter. No DC Power Supply to inject voltage, no soldering iron to replace components.

About my issue and my goal:
A friend of mine has a MacBook Air M1 A2337 that does not...

IBM NetVista Pentium III - USI Motherboard w/ Teapo SC
              by iMic
              Hi folks,

I have a couple of IBM NetVista desktop computers from around 2000-2001. They have Universal Scientific Industrial (USI) Pro286i motherboards, 733MHz Pentium III processors, and a whole bunch of bad Teapo capacitors. One board has visibly bad and venting capacitors, while the other doesn't look too bad so far.

The board with venting caps works fine, while the good looking board occasionally refuses to power on unless it's left for about 30 seconds after connecting the power - even with a known good power supply. (I am however aware I'll need to check the PSU...

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair
              by momaka
Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

I ask some good person for help on "@" character and how to understand the indicated
              by gabri2211
Greetings to all of you, as you will understand from the questions, I'm not familiar with electronic diagrams .... from theory to practice there is always an abyss :o)

1 - I often find the "@" character in the electronic diagrams of laptops near the component and I'd like to understand if it indicates a component that may not be present in the real hardware execution or if there is a different explanation for the use of this @.

              2 - I write these examples:
              2S@ PC217 0.22U_0603_16V7K 16 volts (max) what does it mean 7K ?
              ...

Trying to understand how to find best replacement cap for old parts.
              by samoelec
Disclaimer: This is the first time I step into the realm of analog electronics and my natural language is not English, so please forgive me if I failed to use the correct terms when describing things.

Recently I purchased a Tektronix TDS1012, a 20 years old product for cheap and I thought it could be a nice opportunity for playing (i.e. recapping) and learn something in the process.
The power supply board is exactly the same from this post so I'll just steal it for now.

I'm trying to find replacements for all those Lelon electrolytic caps, but then quickly...
