    Ugh another sick 2TB disk
    Code:

      Re: A Colossal HDD Failure

      The saga continues:
      Code:
       5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 051 051 005 Pre-fail Always - 1050
       9 Power_On_Hours 0x0012 095 095 000 Old_age Always - 40489
       12 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 101
      193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 001 001 000 Old_age Always - 242918
      196 Reallocated_Event_Count 0x0032 050 050 000 Old_age Always - 1075
      192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032 046 046 000 Old_age Always - 65535
      197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0022 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0
This is one of three identical disks configured the same way, those load cycles were self imposed, not from power savings...

The disk is currently *very* slow and is slowing down the RAID5 that it's part of right now. I wonder if I should replace it sooner than later, though if I can find a cheap replacement I should buy one now?

Which disk will die first...the above disk or one that has

And be d**ned if I have to get a SMR disk because they're cheaper...though I'd think the SMR disk might work fine for the PVR.

Don't buy those $10 PSU "specials". They fail, and they have taken whole computers with them.

Seems like it's a specific temperature. Don't know. Also the drive appears to "work" ... just very slow when the ambient temperature is, say, above 70F or so... Below that, it works perfectly.

BOOTED! Well, normally that's a good thing...except when it got kicked from my disk array! Just noticed my RAID was running degraded.

Looks like the disk went to greener pastures. Sort of. It's still "working" (and SMART says "PASSED") alas it's probably time to say goodbye... It only had ~40000 hours on it when it finally got the boot, sigh.

                  ---

I just hotswapped a not-so-great condition WD RE4 for the very sick Toshiba disk (manufactured late 2014) as a stopgap. Currently going through recovery at the moment....I think it will take about 8 hours. The WD RE4 was a RAID1 mirror to another 2TB disk, and that RAID1 was the backup to the current RAID5 - the mirror device was a better lower hour disk and I figure that if I lose the contents of the WD and the main RAID5, I'd still have that younger disk left over as the remaining backup and not gamble whether the WD RE4 was healthy.

I still need another disk real soon, and hopefully I can boot off the WD RE4, though probably will need to reinstall grub onto the disk and array...

Bah. I moved that sick Toshiba disk to another machine and ran a nondestructive write badblocks run...
Came through clean - no problems reading or writing!

Same SMART error log showed up as on the other machine, but the drive worked just fine. Wonder if I should trust using this disk anymore. Currently running it RAID1 with the other array I broke up to put another disk in the main RAID5.

IBM LTO 7 Tape Drive - Dust Sensors??
                      by RetroComputingGrotto
I have a Quantum SuperLoader robotic tape library that uses an IBM LTO 7 tape drive which is constantly complaining that it needs cleaning. If you insert a cleaning tape, it performs the clean and resets the cleaning counter to 0 hours. It should only require cleaning every 50 or so working hours but after as little as just 1 hours use it requests cleaning. We've purchased a new cleaning tape along with new LTO backup tapes but that has not resolved the problem.

I have taken the library apart and can see no noticeable signs of dust inside. I have removed the tape drive from the...

Dell 9310 Memory or RAM (Random-Access Memory) failure (2,4)
                      by puccovelli
Hi all, I hope this is the right place to post.

I'm having a problem with a Dell 9310 which is posting 2 orange, 4 white lights on startup (hangs on Dell BIOS logo). The service manual says its a RAM failure.

I've taken the motherboard out and noticed that one of what looks like an SMA 0805 resistor has blown (see photo). The board is an LA-J144P Rev 2.0(A01).

1] Could someone confirm what the component that has blow actually is (and where I could get another from).
2] Whether this component is likely to cause the RAM failure issue, and if replacing...

I've got a control display for a Carrier chiller that I'm trying to understand what the common failure with these boards are. This is the board in question https://www.supplyhouse.com/Carrier-...arquee-Display all of them seem to develop a failure with the up and down arrow buttons on the right side of the display, the esc and enter keys I've never seen fail. Once these boards are plugged in they run 24/7, you used to have to press extremely hard with the end of the blunt screwdriver and you could still get the arrows to work but now it has completely stopped working. The button...
