    Is this any good?

At my local PC store, there are two Dell towers being sold. They are not ordinary towers but are Poweredge servers. I can't remember the models to be precise, but they have P3 1.13Ghz CPUs and are black coloured towers, so I think they are either 1500SC or 500SC models from Dell.
Anyway, they are going for a few beans and I'm wondering what I could use one for. Any ideas?
Can these be used as regular PCs or am I just dreaming?

    Thanks.

    for most people, yeah.
those working on hd video won't profit much..heh...

but most people just surf, email, word process, do a lil paint(kids)etc.
    for such, it's quite fine.

heck untill last yeari was doing video(sd, though) on 1.3 tualatin.
and i wasn't displeased at all.
what bothered me somewhat was that when i was capping video i couldn't comfortably surf the web, as it could be too slow.

Those poweredge's should be good for general computing as i4004 said. Most poweredges only have a 2 or 4mb integraded ati video card, so they can't do much, they will run youtube videos, maybe some stuff in windows movie maker, but no dvd playback or anything.

cpu he mentions can do dvd decoding even if the video card won't be helping at all.
essentially only thing that video card needs to do is to run the resolution and refresh he wants.
if it can do that, video will play allright.

but shouldn't the p3 system over 1ghz have somewhat more video ram on the video card?
        2 or 4mb is like...before 2000.
that p3 should be coppermine of some sort.

anyho, 800x600 and 1024x768 should work on acceptable refresh rates even if it's just 4mb vram.

        does it have agp slot?
not that hard to find agp card if integrated is so underpowered.
but again, if it can run resolution and refresh that's needed..there's probably no need.
faster gpus and more vram mostly accelerate games, not most other things.

its funny the lure of secondhand stuff. you just end up with tons of computers consuming lots of power when one or two GOOD ones would be the best idea. i put a stop to this here a while back

Agree. Get much better ones. Don't spend on P3's and early P4. Go for 2.8Ghz and up with DDR or DDR2. Even C2D.

            Cheers, Wizard

Like having lots of computers isn't a good thing?

                >but shouldn't the p3 system over 1ghz have somewhat more video ram on the video card?

Ya, most of the time, but this is a dell poweredge, this particular model is meant to be a server for a small buisness. Dosen't need anything more than that. My dual 1ghz xeon poweredge only has a 4mb integraded rage 3d.

FWIW, at 1.13GHz it's surely a Tualatin core, so they could upgrade to 1.4ghz.
There is a coppermine at 1.13 but they were rare and got recalled, and anyway Intel only approved using them on 1 particular motherboard, probably not what's in the Poweredge.

Well in the end they only had one left today so my friend took it instead. It has 2x 18GB SCSI HDDs from what I've been told and he shall attempt to install XP on it and use it as a media center.
