A question about a Antec Basiq 500w PSU

    Hello all

I am wondering if a Antec Basic 500W PSU would handle a Radeon HD 3850's power requirement.

cause right now i have a Antec Basiq 500W PSU and a 6800 GT video card (a HD 3850 should be a bit better then the current 6800GT i have now). i dont need dual cards or anything

It depends on the rest of your system, but as long as you have a basic system (not quad-core + 4 HDD's and 3 optical drives and tons of other stuff) it'll run it no probs.

      yea its a P4 3.2ghz HT 800mhz FSB northwood, 8x AGP, SATA 500gb HDD, ATA Pioneer DVR-110D, 2x 1gb GSKILL PC3200.

the 3850 i am looking at is a AGP card. the only thing is that they dont have this PSU in the compatable PSU list. the 3850 should give me a little more boost then this 680o GT does

Read the voltage rail amps on approved PSU's and see if the Antec has enough amps there to match.

Antec has been making low reliability crap with Fuhjyyu caps for a several years and they were probably leary of including an Antec in their list. [Good idea actually.]

Antec Basiq however uses Capxon caps.
Not first rate but they do okay in PSU's.
It is an FSP [Fortron Source] design/built PSU which is usually fairly decent.

            No no no:
Read the voltage rail amps --->> on 'approved' PSU's,,,,
and see if the Antec is in that range.

that is what i was doing. i was posting mine so it would be better to compair with

ATI has a few Antec PSU in their list.

one is a Antec NeoHE 550

              24A @ 3.3V DC - Output Current
              20A @ 5V DC - Output Current
              18A @ 12V DC - Output Current
              18A @ 12V DC - Output Current
              18A @ 12V DC - Output Current
              0.8A @ -12V DC - Output Current
              2.5A @ 5V DC - StandbyOutput Current

by the looks of it my PSU should be able to handle a 3850 - 4870 (non X2) single cards. mine does have a single PCI-E power connector. i am not sure of the AGP versions wil take the PCI-E power adapter ( since it is normally a PCI-E card) or a molex (what my 6800 GT is using).

                No, again.
                Not same model,
yours is 500W while one you referenced is 550.

Open your computer, there is a specification sticker on your power supply listing out the voltages and currents.

                Is this one is yours?

two 12V with 18A each sounds low.

Re: A question about a Antec Basiq 500w PSU

I found this chart that is supposed to be the actual power draw of the video cards with single card installed. I would take it as more of a guide than goshpel as:
The amount of RAM generally isn't shown and that affects power consumption.
Also not all brands using the same chip are going to use the same amount of power.
[In other words the criteria used to make this chart was pretty 'loose' and inexact.]

Numbers are as: "3D" or "Idle-3D" or "Idle-2D-3D".

                  HD4870 X2 _ 88W-262W
                  HD4870 _ 65W-80W-130W
                  HD4850 X2 _ 230W
                  HD4850 OC _ 64W-133W
                  HD4850 _ 41W-61W-110W
                  HD4670 _ 10W-70W
                  HD4650 _ 10W-80W
                  HD4470 _ 10W-50W
                  HD4450 _ 10W-30W
                  HD3870 X2 _ 58W-66W-171W
                  HD3870 _ 19W-25W-81W
                  HD3850 X3 _ 156W
                  HD3850 X2 _ 54W-145W
                  HD3850 _ 14W-20W-63W
                  HD3690 _ 21W-51W
                  HD3650 _ 12W-42W (512MB)
                  HD3650 _ 19W-53W (256MB)
                  HD3470 _ 32W
                  HD3450 _ 18W-36W

                  By this a 3850 is 63W max.
                  63w/12v = 5.25amps

                  I think you are okay.

Re: A question about a Antec Basiq 500w PSU

12v for CPU is on other rail.
1 HDD is up to ~ 1 amp and optical up to ~ 2 amp on 12v
                    RAM is on 5v.

the sticker says the same thing the site says that i posted voltage and amps on about my PSU. i posted and compared stats of a PSU from ATI's site which i chose the one with the closest watts to mine like PCBONEZ said to do, and see if it comes close or matches (which just has the same amps on the 12v rails just minus a rail), yes mine is lacking 50w but it also lacks a 3rd 12v rail (probably why the extra 50w). but both provide 18a each on both PSU's rails.

if that other PSU with its 3 12v rails at 18a each can power one of those cards then my PSU with its 2 12v rails at 18a each should do the same (but no dual cards). i don't plan on doing dual cards.

i think one of the 12v rails is on my PCI-E power connector from the PSU. i wonder if those cards (since they are PCI-E by design with a bridge chip to work on AGP) if they have the PCI-E power connector or the 4 pin molex like my 6800 GT has.
