usb type c to hdmi only works on phone and not computer

I bought a new MSI gaming laptop to replace my desktop. It was important to me to have triple monitor support. I figured since it had HDMI, Thunderbolt (aka Mini DisplayPort), and USB Type C it would be easy. Well, unfortunately, the USB Type C to HDMI adapter I bought on Amazon doesn't seem to work on the computer.

When plugged into the computer the little blue light on the adapter comes on (so I know the port isn't broken) but the monitor just says check signal cable. However, when I plug it into the USB Type C on my HTC 10 Android phone it works instantly.

Any ideas? It's an MSI GE62VR Apache laptop with i6-6700HQ, GTX 1060 graphics, 16GB DDR4, and Windows 10.

try not trusting so-called usb type c or any other "universal" ports.
the individual functions actually supported are down to the hardware maker, the drivers and the o.s.

I would check into the windows 10 program and see if the driver for the monitor will work. I know some drivers for window 7 will not work on Windows 8 even though they are USB 2.0 ports. perhaps the monitor manufacturer has a different driver for Windows 10 on their site.

The manual mentions USB 3.x, DisplayPort, PCIe, Audio, and Thunderbolt 3 (Optional).
Can you try a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter ?

I was the understanding USB-C is the same as USB-3 is this not correct?

it's my understanding that USB-C is just usb data but with a configurable power system allowing it to be used to (for example) charge the laptop.

i cant see how it can drive a monitor unless the usb controller has a direct link to the gpu.

On September 1, 2016 - HDMI Licensing, LLC released the HDMI Alternate Mode for USB Type-C Connector Standard. This will allow HDMI enabled source devices to utilize a USB Type-C connector to directly connect to HDMI enabled displays, and deliver native HDMI signals over a simple cable without the need for cumbersome protocol and connector adapter or dongle chips.

HDMI Alt Mode will support the full range of HDMI 1.4b features such as: resolutions up to 4K, Audio Return Channel (ARC), 3D, HDMI Ethernet Channel (HEC), and Consumer Electronic Control (CEC). This HDMI passive cable will utilize the USB Type-C connector on the source side and any HDMI connector on the display side. Unlike the other Alt Mode display technologies (e.g. DisplayPort, MHL) which require various adapters or dongles to connect to HDMI displays, HDMI Alt Mode enables an easy connection via a simple USB Type-C to HDMI cable. This is capable of 4K 30fps - basic UHD - video delivery without any additional chips. The USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) standard enables the devices to draw up to 100W power over USB Type-C port. The USB Type-C ports which supports HDMI Alt Mode will be identified by using the HDMI logo along with the USB trident logo.
                    so - got the logo?
