Is because of, BAD CAPS! Anyone else agree? It just seems like so many things go bad because of faulty capacitors or bad connections to the capacitors, or even bad design which doesn't include enough capacitors to filter the power.
It seems like to me the #1 reason for electronics failure...

BAD SOLDERING
by a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong way, and I can see the problem getting worse now that RoHS is in.Comment

Electrolytic caps are about the only part left that isn't truly solid state.

A sealed (hopefully) metal can full of chemicals that have to undergo chemical reaction s to keep working - and do so without popping the seal from heat and pressure.
From that viewpoint their closest relative is probably vacuum tubes.Mann-Made Global Warming.

I would vote for bad solder connections too, at least for usual, non IT related and non multilayer epoxy PCB using appliance.
E.g. most CRT TV and many other appliances do have some bad connections very early in their life.
For IT equipment with multilayer epoxy PCB`s, caps are probably the number one, as bad solder connections are very rare due to the generally higher production process.Comment

I'm having a problem with a Dell 9310 which is posting 2 orange, 4 white lights on startup (hangs on Dell BIOS logo). The service manual says its a RAM failure.
I've taken the motherboard out and noticed that one of what looks like an SMA 0805 resistor has blown (see photo). The board is an LA-J144P Rev 2.0(A01).
1] Could someone confirm what the component that has blow actually is (and where I could get another from).
