    CPU downgrade?

Hi guys;i have here an old E machines T3958 Intel (R) Celeron CPU 2.93GHZ 1 mem ram, the CPU just burned due to the Bestec Crappy Power supply,
now i changed the power supp with an old HP that i have in my scrap, also i have an Intel CPU 2.00Ghz in my scrap,
My question can i use this Intel 2.00GHZ processor in place of the 2.93GHZ and if good what will be the cons of the change in performance wise?

Note: i have on order 2gb Mem on the way.

    Re: CPU downgrade?

if they use the same socket then try it.
check the specs on both here:
    http://www.cpu-world.com/index.html

btw, it's unlikely that the cpu got trashed unless the motherboard got hit first.
the cpu isnt powered by the psu, it has it's own regulator circuits around the socket.

As long as it's the same socket and the chipset supports it. I doubt that it will fix your problem though because if the CPU is dead your mobo probably is too.

E-machines are known to self destruct because of the psu btw,
the first thing to go is usually the usb chip.

Wow That was fast thanks .That's why i have this forum as my favorite of all, with that said.
I had the Pc on my bench ready to swap the CPU just was waiting for your reply and went a head and swapped the Intel 2.93GHZ for Intel 2.00 GHz and you know what the PC is alive again but a little slower, hope when i get the 2 GHz of mem ram i will get better performance. thanks

            test the usb function.

and post us a foto from inside the psu so we can see all those burst caps - specially the one on the 5v standby supply near the fan!!!

Looks like its a socket 478, if it is there are lots on ebay for cheap. for example Intel SL7Q9 Celeron D 340 Processor 2.93GHz/533/256 Socket 478 $14.95

The Celeron D is a Prescott core. If it's not an Intel 865 Chipset, it won't work. I would have suggested upgrading to something like a P4 2.66 or 3.06GHz.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

                  Re: CPU downgrade?

I was just suggesting this based on the limited information provided by the original poster
That there are cheap processors available for this board and he should not have to live with the 2ghz one he has.
So DON'T buy THAT cpu. It was only an EXAMPLE

you can get a 3.0 P4 really cheap now, around $2 shipped. Still a decent proc and fun to OC!
