    Dead Emachine T3624

My daughters (less than 2 year old) T3624 e-machine died. Opened it up...caps all look good. One green led on the MOBO lights when you fire it up. Hooked up my power supply tester. Tested good. Maybe it's the main switch. Pulled the switch connector and shorted with a screwdriver. Nothing.....Then I googled and started to read. Seems this motherboard may have some problems, but the bestec PS seems to be the main reason for failures.
Is there any hope of bringing this MOBO back to life. My concern is, if I buy a replacement MOBO, how much trouble will I have with winxp on her hard drive recognizing the changed MOBO? I don't really want to buy another copy of winxp. I don't have much experience swapping MOBO's with xp. It was really easy in the win 98 days. Any help with the motherboard would be helpful(Seabreeze T3). Any help with winxp and new MOBO would also be helpful.

    Re: Dead Emachine T3624

those bestec PSUs are prone to putting +12v on the +3.3v or +5v rails, which is instant death to the motherboard. The board is likely not recoverable. Sadly enough, I've tossed a bunch of those boards in the trash, all killed my those crappy bestec power supplies.

Just find another board like yours (and power supply, any good brand), and XP should boot right up and not bitch a bit. XP gets cranky if you change to different model/type hardware, it'll want to reactivate, and if M$ sees its different hardware, they'll tell you to piss off and buy a new license.

I had an emachine board a while back that was dead, and the south bridge chip got really hot as soon as the power cord was plugged in. Probably toasted by high +5v standby voltage on the Bestec. Wish I would have metered the power supply before I trashed it.

that is the exact mode of failure they are known for.
the +5 stby is the one that overshoots.byebye mobo.
        i have seen over 12v!

Scary to think that the voltage causing the burnouts is the one that is on all the time, particularly when nobody is home. I wonder how many house fires have been started by Bestec PSU's melting USB peripherals to people's desks while they are sleeping or gone to work

had a customer bring an evilmachines into the shop that had melted the mousepad/mouse to her desk.
i finally tossed the mess after we built her a new box.it was annoying to catch a whiff of burnt electronics while i am working on something.it stunk bad.

You would think the poly fuse would pop on the board before it went that far. I'll never plug my Canon A630 into any PC with a cheap PSU

How can I be sure that my EC chip is dead?
                by double_DD
                Hi all,

As the title suggests, how can I be sure that my EC chip is really dead?

I've recently gotten into this hobby of laptop repairs, and have successfully brought back to life a couple with some easy fixes, mostly shorted caps.

Now I'm working on HP Probook 455 G8, that had some "devil" run around on 3V line, burning a bunch of stuff. Luckily I have a dead 455G7 (for spare parts) so I managed to fix it (swapped burned parts) to a point that it will charge (both on barrel jack and usb-c), but it doesn't want to turn on. There is a 3V3 on a keyboard...

what i went through dealing with my mobo with dead onboard sound!
                by ChaosLegionnaire
so i took out one of my spare gigabyte ep35-ds3r mobos from storage for use to do some cpu, ram and video card testing of stuff i bought from ebay and got for free from momaka. he bought 50 e8400 cpus for cheap from ebay some years ago and i decided to help him relieve him of some of his supply since he had waaaay too many!! what did we say about hoarding too much stuff and depriving others of them?! *cough* socialism *cough* lol!

i had to blow some dust off the board and heatsinks with the datavac as i didnt clean it up before putting it in storage. after finishing...

                by disorder
                hello guys,

                i need help to repair a edm-033 ps2
history : as always hdmi port and usb ports destroyed after unplugged
after change them, ps5 dead too : 1 beep, no blue light. after inspection 1.8v power was shorted, and because of dead panasonic chip. after remove it : no short anymore
                so i changed it
now i have got 5v stby,, 3.3v stby, 3.3v power, 1.8v power and no short on them
but the ps5 is dead again : 1 beep, near 10 seconds with power lines and then off, no blue light ...

i don't see any projection of liquid metal on pcb.
                ...

                Finding a dead short component
                by Beton
                Hi guys!
I searched for the term "dead short" in the forum but no specific thread came up however if I'm just blind and couldn't see the thread talking about this please forward me to that direction.
So my problem is I don't know how to find the source of a dead shorted voltage rail. Dead short = ~0 ohm resistance.
I have two VGAs (HD 4850 and HD 4870), both dead shorted to ground on the memory rail. I have the boardview file for the 4870 and the memory rail consists around ~7892346 capacitors...
I have a bench PSU and if I try to inject voltage the voltage...

                Chieftec GPS-450-AA with dead 20N60C3
                by zunasthegreat
Hello everyone hope all doing well!
I have this PSU (GPS450-AA delta oem) around for like 4-5 years and I had it recapped early 2020 or 2021 with mostly UCC KY and Nichicon PW's. The bulk was and still is fine, the original Ltec's were bloated and empty. The previous issue was some major coil whine noise and at times random shutdowns when going idle. Today it started tripping the mains breaker and I think I have dead APFC mosfets (20N60C3). Right now upon checking I have the Q1 and Q3 FETs dead so far and I guess those are responsible for the PFC circuit. The only thing I care is If there...
