    Just hangs

    Hi all.
Please help me out here.My machine cannot load OS (winXP Pro), it goes as far as displaying the screen with options like 'start windows normaly' and others (I know u know that stage) and then it stays there forever...whether I leave it to do the countdown or I press the Enter key. When I try installing Windows, setup runs pretty well until a point where it says 'Setup is starting windows', then again it stays there forever. Tried two different installation CDs, two different HDDs and two different CD-Roms, got same results. Can be a motherboard problem? If so, what might be wrong with it? It's an MSI P4 motherboard, almost a year old.

    Thanx.

    Re: Just hangs

Find a technician with a BART or WinPE disk in his kit. I've seen a number of occasions where a CHKDSK is required, and this prevents Windows from starting.

If it gets really bad, your technician should have a copy of NTFSDOS, that he can use to do a NTFSCHK from a DOS boot diskette. Sometimes the system volume is such that BART and WinPE will not boot, or allow access to it. NTFSCHK gets around this problem.

If you suspect hardware, create a Memtest86 boot CD and let it run for serveral complete passes. Note that tests 5,8 are prone to failure on earlier AMD boards such as ABit KG7.

Why does this sound so familiar....

since you say you have tried HDD CD and 2 winxp CD I'll bet it is a motherboard issue...not that the MB is stuffed...sound like windows is looking for something

I'll leave this to the winxp Guru's here

My thoughts are possibly BIOS, memory or Iam thinking some chip set driver issue.
I assume you reset bios to default, maybe see if there is a bios update or issues with the version you got
Maybe run that memtest proggie, doubt its it but cant hurt

I have a vague memory of a MB that would do this but don't recall brand or the exact issue, think the fix was to build a custom install CD

What is the exact model of MB?

Really wish I could but, I can't help you further Lazzie.... no winxp Guru

bgavin bet me here but yeah thats a possibility chkdsk

        Re: Just hangs

        what board is it exactly?
are you formatting the disk during install?
have you installed xp with this exact configuration before?

what i would do in that case is remove anything you dont need to make the install eg all cards except the graphics card, remove all usb devices you have plugged in and disable in the bios any onboard audio or lan. then make the install and afterwards add each device until you have a problem.

I will check the board again and post the full details of it as well as bios...but its an MSI board (V class or something lyk dat) with phoenix bios.
Yah I do format during instal, tried both quick format and low level format.
Its not the first time i instal using this MB, i'v done that before.

          Full Story
There is an AMD PC that was attacked by a variant of brontok. It kept on restartin jus after log in.I slaved its HDD in my machine and successfully cleaned it.I took it back to its PC and then it failed to boot.Thinking dat the bootsector might have bin affected,I inserted an XP disk and tried repairing it (tried both fixboot and fixmbr). Then it talked about missing or corrupt hal.dll.Again I went to the repair console and replaced the dll file. When I reboot, thats when the current problem started. At that point removed my HDD from my machine and plugged into that AMD to c if will boot ok,it ddnt...the screen jus remained black atfta POST.I took my HDD bek to my PC and did exactly the same problem. Then I was puzzled coz afta removin the AMD HDD my machine was ok...i min i switched it on and it was all good.

Sorry for such a long story.Should have posted this y'day but ddnt have time.

          Regards

            Re: Just hangs

Use Darik's Boot and Nuke to really format everything on the HDD, be very very careful though, I'd remove any harddrive I do not want formatted because unlike a normal format this will be totally irreversible...

              Re: Just hangs

hal.dll corrupt means you need to do a complete and fresh reinstall. It is the dll for the Hardware Abstraction Layer. it is VERY type dependent. A bad hal results in the exact thing that youmentioned. I had it before. The only way to fix it was a complete reinstall of windows FRESH not REPAIR. It tends to be very picky between AMD and Intel, multicore and single core, multiple CPU single CPU, mobile chip/nonmobile/tablet etc.
