Computer hackers poke another hole in HD DVD's armor

SAN FRANCISCO: The 2005 science fiction film "Serenity" portrayed a ragtag crew of space pirates fighting to unravel the mysteries of their galaxy.

Reality may have mimicked fiction last weekend as a loosely knit coalition of hackers around the world defeated the antipiracy software protecting several high-resolution movies in the HD DVD format. They then began distributing copies of films — starting with "Serenity" by Universal Pictures — using BitTorrent, a popular file-sharing tool. full article

    WTF is this bit?

AACS was explicitly designed so that compromised players and programs like WinDVD could be disabled remotely by revoking their licenses. He said that the AACS group might take that approach after an investigation.

If Hollywood wasn't so damned greedy, they wouldn't have to worry about copying. Its like copying has only been around since DVDs. When the the studios make stupid decisions (like the recent MASH tv screw-up), I am all for copying a movie.

Greedy bastards need to learn that the more they put the screws to their customers, the less money they will get.

If you like playing games, linux is a hard switch......IMHO the game support have made MS what it is like. If you have to decide on witch sw to run your biz on, you certainely choose that one, you probably are knowing from home. Same for most pro`s in that field. They choose what they are knowing and for wich they can easily get support if there is some problem.

I agree, willawake. I keep putting off learning Linux, but DRM and the prohibitive expense of Vista is like both a punch in the face and a knee to the groin. In the meantime, I'm keeping XP and praying someone hacks Dx10 so it works in XP.

It was only a matter of time before someone cracked the encryption.

AS expected...Blu-ray has finally been cracked.
Now watch security features inside the blu-ray players turn the system you just spent $$$ on become a new doorstop....until someone figures out how to reset the player.

I already did, I picked up Ubuntu when I was tinkering last January. Then when I saw the stuff Vista had to offer, and I knew that Microsoft would push all the latest digital rights and "genuine advantage" and..... I learned Linux this past September.

                      by Hondaman
Recently I got some DVDs that won't play on my PC drive. This is not unexpected, since there is a warning on the back of each package. But they play just fine on my set-top DVD player hooked up to the HDMI port on my TV set.

I bought "Head of the Class" where Howard Hesseman [WKRP in Cincinnati] teaches a class of extra-smart students. I also bought "Ode to Billy Joe", a 1976 movie.

All of these appear to be released by Warner Brothers. Rumor has it DVDs from several movie studios have a root directory that contains extra entries of non-existent files...

Aluminum SMD caps vs thru hole caps (reliability)

The PCB motor for 1987 Technics SLP-120 CD player has slow spin-up issues. Similar to what another tech in the below video reported.

I replaced the three bi-polar 47uF electros but that made no difference. The orig three bi-polar 47uF electros tested okay on my ESR M-tester.
I have not tested/replaced those alum. SMD electro PCB caps.
Are Al smd caps are more prone to failure (or degradation) than regular thru-hole electros?
All the thru hole electros I removed / replaced on this CDP (and most...

How to correctly desolder through hole IC?
                      by LearningToRepair
                      Hi!

I tried to desolder through I had IC that I wanted to replace but failed. And now I came here to learn what's the correct way for doing this. I tried to use soldering wick but the capillary force kept solder in the hole. With soldering wick I only managed to remove the part of solder that was outside the hole. But the solder that was inside the hole never got out. And of course when I moved on to next pin the solder in previous hole hardened again so no matter how many times I did all the pins there was still solder in holes.

Question 1: what would have been correct...

MSI RX 470 ARMOR 4GB with limited frequency
                      by Traptor
                      Hi folks,
I have got an MSI RX 470 ARMOR 4GB GPU with a problem and I dont know where can I start repair and if it is worth it.
The card erlier life is unknown.

The problem is that: when I start gpu test (Furmark Heaven Benchmark) no problem - no artifacts or something - but after a little time and then the pc is rebooting.
I tested the gpu with tserver:
The test with maxmimum memory frequency is OK
                      ./agt -mem=1650
                      ./tserver -boardtest=memfa

But, if I increase the engine frequency I have got error. Whit this parameters the...

Samsung UN65TU8000 - Panel Issue [ hole in ribbon cable ]
                      by NWArkGuy
Well, I will be the first to admit that I screwed up...

In attempting to replace the backlight in a UN65TU8000, I made a hole through one of the ribbon cables between the board that runs along the bottom of the back of the TV and the panel. This lead to a between a 1/4 to 1/2 inch vertical stripe running the full height of the image.

I don't have the experience; personally, to solder a bridging wire for the paths that were cut. So, I have been on the hunt for other Samsung TV's of similar size.

I have 2 that I have found and have in my possession. ...
