    Shorted out Components Behind Cpu

Hi just about 10 minutes ago I was checking that all my fans were working. I accidently dropped a screw on the components behing the CPU like ok the other side of the board they look like tiny capacitors or transistors. When the screw fell on them the computers display went black and started saying no signal. So i uplugged the computer for 10 seconds then plugged it back in again and it wouldnt post with all my ram (16gb) if i have all four sticks in the computer will not post ive tried them in different slots etc. Could my motheroard have been damaged? or will it not last as log now. or is the ram jst fried. if it makes any difference it is in the first slot closest to the CPU

PS dont have another computer to test parts in and the motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 the ram is corsair vengeance 1000w corsair psu and Sapphire radeon HD 7770 Ghz edition I know a lot about computers etc but not much about circuits BTW this is also a custom build. If you need to know anything else just ask ,Thanks

Also forgot to mention i was installing a game on my 2tb hdd when the computer turned off and when that hdd is connected windows 7 takes over 5 mins to boot eve though windows 7 is on an ssd and the 2tb hdd was just games it makes aa clicking noise every few secs but when windows is actually running it works fine could that be a controller error or is the hard drive failing. i just hope it is the hdd and not anything on the motherboard. before i accidently shorted the mobo out windows booted in about 30 secs

My cpu is a AMD athlon II x3 and i unlocked the 4th core and it now says AMD Phenom II x4 b40

Its toasted unless you have specs for all of those tiny SMD's and the gear to replace them.

You probably shorted out some of those transistors. I would just RMA it.

Sounds to me like you may have damaged the HDD controller in some way?

Also, the failure to POST with all your RAM may mean you fried either a stick or two of the ram or one of the memory controllers (note that the latter is actually built into the CPU on modern AMD chips so you might want to test that in a known good board in case that's what happened).

You may of course be "lucky" and it's just the components you directly shorted out that're the issue though

the computer is working still i jsut wanted to know if the motheboard wont last long like if the short shortened the mb's life also im going to RMA the hdd and i have ordered replacement RAM i hope the slot isnt damaged

Re: Shorted out Components Behind Cpu

Dude, what does the ram have to do with those components under the cpu?

Those components in the back are decoupling capacitors and other filtering stuff, they're meant to keep the processor happy.

The CPU may become unstable with 4 memory modules because something there in the back is shorted or broken (a capacitor or transistor or resistor no longer doing its job because it's broken) but that doesn't mean the memory is faulty.

Same with the hard disk - either the connection between chipset (which contains the sata controller) and the cpu is faulty, or the cpu is unstable, or you get a lot of memory errors (data from hdd goes into ram ).

Either way, it doesn't mean the ram modules are broken or the hard drive.

RMA the board, try the memory modules at a friends' computer. Use Memtest to check them for errors.
Put the HDD in a friends' computer and test it for errors.

Why on earth would you buy new memory modules before testing them? Are you made of money and can just throw money?

Re: Shorted out Components Behind Cpu

i bought a usb to sata/ide converter and tried the drive in my old laptop and it has reallocated sectors :/ i just checked the drive 2 days ago and did a full scan maybe the power loss made the heads hit the platters or something. also that one ram module has got to be faulty if i have that one in the computer it will not post if i have all 4 of them in or just the suspected faulty one it wont post my other hdds and ssd seems fine though im currently on the laptop and running memtest on the computer after that i will do a full surface scan on all my drives

For CPUs with on die memory controllers, you're possibly required to replace the CPU now.

Test the cpu with the new board before buying anything else.

Clicking in the hard drive is going to be bad sectors or a bad r/w arm.. Simple!

Does your system have an onboard speaker? If so is it plugged onto your motherboard so you can hear the sytem check bleeps? Put the RAM stick that you think is faulty into slot 1 and take note of the bleep pattern and post it here... I will tell you what your system is saying is wrong.
