I'm new to this site and new to computer repair. I fix ps3's all the time but this is uncharted territory for me so please help a noob and bare with my lack of knowledge. My xps recently started having issues, first off a few days ago the battery light started flashing orange which i found out meant the battery was going bad. I figured i had some time so i didn't buy a battery right away. Yesterday i tried to turn it on and the keyboard lights up and the system buttons to the right of the power button then everything dies. I've tried powering up with/without the battery and ac power supply. My power cord was crushed in a recliner a year ago and the blue light hasn't come on since so i can't tell if it's shorting but the charger had been working fine before this. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this i would appreciate any input. I'm not sure if the orange battery light is related or not but from my research it sounds like it's either a short on the motherboard or a power supply problem. it's out of warranty and I'm a broke college student so I need my computer but i can't afford to drop enough for a new laptop.

Start by borrowing a multimeter and test the output from the AC adapter. Match it to the output voltage on the adapter bottom sticker. Are they close ? should be around 19v. Better still if you can, you could also rule out (or in) the adapter by borrowing a known good one to try. Some Dells won't successfully boot without something of a charge showing from the battery even with AC connected. strange but true.. Had one do it last week. A Latitude D830 no sign of life until the battery had a few mins to take on a charge.Last edited by Gariarto; 03-24-2013, 06:32 PM. -

I don't have another charger that i can test it with but i checked the voltage coming out of mine, and it's 19.5 which is what it's labeled output is so that's good. Is there anything externally i should check before I open it up and start trying things inside?Comment

There is a chance it could be the socket that the power supply plugs into. These often become damaged if you trip over the cord, or something similar. Try wiggling it with the power supply plugged in, to see if the charging light comes on at all.Comment

Thank you for all the input but today i plugged the power cord in and it just worked it's charging, it turns on, stays on, and works fine. Should i just pretend like everything's fine or should i look into this further?Comment

I got a bare Dell Lattitude 5590 with missing battery, RAM, RTC battery and Storage, I wanted to put some components in it and use it as my home laptop. After adding a FRU 2GB DDR4 2400 SoDIMM RamaxelRAMI've tried booting Linux Mint from USB, I got an error while trying to boot it. I tried reseating the stick, different slot, didn't help.
I tried to boot Windows 10 installer, as that was the stock system my model came with, got a BSOD as soon as the installer started booting, different code every time. I've tried switching to AHCI mode, I've tried linux in legacy mode, I've tried compatibility... -
My question pertains to understanding the control circuity inside a Dell PT434 type battery used in Dell E6400, E6410 and other Dell notebooks?
Does anyone have a circuit diagram for the inside of a Dell PT434 battery and/or a description of how the control lines work to control this battery?
My reason for asking is I have a battery which I cannot get to charge beyond 1% in a Dell E6410 or E6400.
The LED bar graph charge indicator on the battery shows one LED lighted when the info button is pressed.

Hello, wanting to see if anyone has any experience with Dell 3100 Chromebook's and might have some input on an issue I've been seeing with them.
I work in Technology for a good size school district, and we've began to switch away from Lenovo Chromebooks over to Dell 3100. I like the Dell 3100's because they seem to be more durable than the Lenovo N22's, N23's and 100e's we've used in the past.. but my main complaint with them is they randomly won't turn on.

So i had this laptop dell latitude 5410 10th gen, good condition and new ssd and 16 gb ram .
The problem is it takes more than a minute to boot ..
The boot sequence starting with a 30 sec black screen and the the dell logo for 20 and when the windows start loading it takes like 7 sec .

So back on my first post I had a water damaged Dell XPS 7590 which I was able to repair:

Which leans me into a new problem I wanted to start a new thread with.
This machine now has issues powering or taking power (usb-c/lightning) via its USB ports.
Symptoms: When a dock is attached, it tends to short out devices attached and does not function, when using a USB A port elsewhere on the laptop, they notify windows of a surge and tend to power cycle the attached device.
