• Re: keeping up with the changing times...

We all do, but while companies such as Apple can keep their fans buying a whole new unit to upgrade the mem' then they are laughing all the way to the bank. Its the biggest reason each smartphone I ever bought was a Motorola....

Hi Volack and welcome. The capacitor is most likely a polymer. Without seeing it I would say its like the one in the pic here ?

Unless one of the guys here have a better choice I would fit this

• Re: I wonder why this RAM module failed

I'm with kc8adu on Gskill. I used to be a big Crucial customer until I was getting failures. They always made good though. Then I went for stocking Corsair, I think I've had one failure from their products. Now I'm a Gskill fan.. I've used hundreds of their stuff in both laptop and desktop applications.. No failures yet and the price is right.

Did anyone else take advantage of the micron/crucial class action suit a few years ago ? I got quite a few letters from the court case offering small restitution claims.

• Re: dell xps L501 booting issues

Start by borrowing a multimeter and test the output from the AC adapter. Match it to the output voltage on the adapter bottom sticker. Are they close ? should be around 19v. Better still if you can, you could also rule out (or in) the adapter by borrowing a known good one to try. Some Dells won't successfully boot without something of a charge showing from the battery even with AC connected. strange but true.. Had one do it last week. A Latitude D830 no sign of life until the battery had a few mins to take on a charge.

• Re: bad cmos battery = no display?

You are welcome.. For related interest.. I just got a desktop in that the guy had removed a third party graphics card from because it failed. He tried using the motherboard's onboard VGA but it would not boot, so he brought it in.
Of course, the BIOS was set on using the seperate card and had no fall-back setting to use the onboard if the seperate card was missing.
A BIOS (CMOS) reset did the trick....

I doubt that the battery removal did anything but reset the motherboards' BIOS settings to default. Perhaps the bios had become corrupted and could not POST because of that ? A CMOS reset was perhaps all it needed....

• Re: Problem, broken legs.

You are quite welcome ! I'm pleased you got a result. I was talking about regular flux core, wire solder, and by extended time I was thinking around a minute ! I should have been more specific, sorry. Take a read through this for a clearer picture of soldering. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldering Plus there's a large number of online video tutorials on Youtube that will help.Re: Problem, broken legs.<br /> <br... extended time

Add more molten 60/40 or similar lead bearing solder to the blocked holes to hold heat at the site. The new solder should readily mingle into the old and allow you to push those busted pieces through. Once out, wick away the excess. Be gentle around those traces with heating for an extended time.
Good luck....

• Re: CheapMemory card readers programmed to fail?

You sure as heck would think so with their failure rate. I fit one in just about every build I do unless otherwise requested and after some experimentation even the top priced brands fail. I settled on the cheap Rosewill brand and have mixed results. They last about the same but are much cheaper to replace.
Look at the early failure rate of the USB 3.0 offerings now too, disgusting. Though the pre programmed failure date theory is compelling, caught out manufacturers would suffer badly if exposed ! I think it's...

• Spills and thrills - Sony Laptop

Confessions of a corner cutting episode.... Take nothing for granted !

Just worked on a laptop brought in by one of our Mexican friends who works locally in a restaurant. He's difficult to understand at the best of times but this time I was very busy and just had him leave it for me to look at. Now. I THOUGHT I made out 'soda' in his brief explanation but I wasn't sure. Anyway, later, it all booted fine into windows one in 3 tries with a variety of odd quirks. After opening the case I could barely make out a little shiny residue around 2 of the the keys but nothing major. Trying...

• Re: Opinions on converting CCFL to LED

As a repair facility this is very time and $$ consuming. Opening those screens, swapping out the ccfl for LED, re-assembling, adding in the LED driver board etc.

Not worth it. Have you tried these guys ?

• Re: What devices usually suffer from bad/blown caps?

tomioo9 if you're looking to make money by taking in as you say "common, easy to repair devices" then like Tom66 said, its not going to be what you are hoping for. Youtube is chest deep in quick fixes that had little to do with proper diagnostics or even using the correct rated parts. Hopefully thats not your inspiration ? If I'm mistaken then I stand corrected but there's an accumulation of help in here thats supplied from a massive time investment in education and long hard earned learning curves. Many of the members...

• Re: Good article on Ceramic caps

Good article, thankyou !

To those of us still learning, that adds another dimension to why things don't go as planned.

So, how does this affect much of the focus in this site, when we see ceramic caps close to and even leaning against heatsinks in switching power supplies ?

• Re: Microsoft Product Activation Rant

Thanks Gabriel ! Just wanted to demystify it a little. Though I'm not liking Window H8's Key Management Services (KMS) activation. You can still back up your activation though. Took me a while to get this off the 'net when I needed to re-install a customers PC. So for those with an interest or need ...

Back up the store folder @ C:\Windows\System32\spp\ It should contain data.dat, tokens.dat and a folder called cache, containing a file named cache.dat.

After you re-install Win 8, run cmd...

• Re: Microsoft Product Activation Rant

Correct me if I'm wrong but different license 'channels' give you different activation rights.

At the top of the heap, VLK or Volume License Key does not require activation. Though Microsoft quickly stemmed the flood of leaked keys early on and an XP VLK install is checked against MS's activation servers' master list of issued keys.

RETAIL channel is supposed to be an unlimited amount of reactivations on the same PC. After a certain amount I think you have to call it in by phone, requesting a new key. I think they...

• Re: Microsoft Product Activation Rant

Trune has the right track. The 'tiniest change' of hardware calling for reactivation is not true.

Your install of XP has to have been brought to that point by previous hardware changes and then the next one is the last straw, so to speak.

During boot-up XP checks the following hardware..

Video card onboard or card
SCSI Adapter
RAM Amount Range (i.e., 0-64mb, 64-128mb, etc.)
IDE Adapter onboard or card
Network Adapter onboard or card (NIC) and its MAC Address
...

• Re: dell 1504fp monitor anti glare screen damage

You can get larger sheets of the film they sell for tablets etc. That would do the trick to add the anti glare back. Only thing is doing it without trapping even the smallest mote of dust under it. Or an air bubble. I can't even do a smartphone without fussing over at least one of the above.
