Re: Password protected engineers software
You may be able to legally do this in most other countries, but not in the USA. The software and media producers have bought out our politians, and got them to pass the DCMA.
It is one of the strictest laws of this kind, and it sucks!Re: Password protected engineers software

Re: oxideqt-codecs in Ubuntu 14.04lts?
As far as the oxideqt problem, it may be just a conflict with an existing package. You usually can't have two vesions of the same package installed.
For Firefox, I'm no longer using Ubuntu. But, on my new Fedora 20 install, I had a similar problem with flash video. I finally discovered that it was using HTML5 as the default for video.
Go into Tools>Add-ons>Extentions and look for "Video WithOut Flash" and disable it.
Also, make sure you have the Adobe flash and Shockwave flash player...

Re: HP Color LaserJet 4650dn jamming if top of page very dark
I just purchased an HP envy from woot. I haven't got it yet, but some people reported that it gets a lot of paper jams. Another person said that you have to go into the printer properties and set the type of paper that you are using. If it isn't listed, you have to create a new entry.
Maybe this will work for you.

Re: Is this true?
Yes, but that is for Intel/AMD processors. Microsoft tried to prevent Linux from being installed on Win 8 PCs by implementing the UEFI Secure Boot. That didn't work because the open source community quickly found a way around it....

Re: Is this true?
I believe Microsoft was once the target of an anti-trust case. Because Windows dominated the OS installed on PC's, they had to allow other operating system to be installed.
Windows is not the dominant OS on ARM devices. Therefore it doesn't apply, and they can lock their ARM devices. If they would have allowed the RT tablets to have Linux installed, I would have snapped one up at the fire-sale price that they were going for.

Re: Thinkpad Flashing Battery
Good luck!
I just noticed the battery life in my Samsung laptop seems to be getting shorter. It's batteries are built-in, so I will have to take it apart just to see what's in it.
A search says this is what I'll find:

Re: Thinkpad Flashing Battery
That site says it is a replacement for a UBP001. I see Mouser has something:

Re: Thinkpad Flashing Battery
The site I linked to before has a cheaper one, and it has leads on it. It is a bit thicker.

Re: WLAN Upgrade in a Lenovo Ideapad P400
It's different with the Thinkpads, not sure if the Ideapad is similar.
I bought a used Seirra 3G card from eBay, a Thinkpad pull. I put it in a non-Thinkpad netbook. It worked in Linux, but the account first needed to to established using a Windows application. The generic Seirra drivers didn't work, as Thinkpad had it's own USB ID embedded in the card. The Thinkpad drivers wouldn't install, because it wasn't a Thinkpad!
I went around in circles several times trying to modify the Windows drivers...

Re: Grub Rescue?
First, your link to the blog article is bad. You can access it here:
Howto: Fixing GRUB
Now, that is about re-installing the GRUB bootloader after a fresh Windows install wipes it out. This doesn't seem to be what your problem was caused by.
Did you add or change any hard drives in this system? Did you alter the boot order in the BIOS settings? If neither of these apply, then maybe your hard drive...

Re: Windows XP End of Life Approaching
Actually. Linus doesn't like the nVidia driver because most of the driver is contained in a "binary blob". This is why there is a kernel message that it "taints" the kernel.
I don't agree with his public display. But it is his finger, and he can stick it where ever he wants.

Re: Windows XP End of Life Approaching
This is not true. the Linux nVidia drivers are excellent. If it wasn't for nVidia Linux, I wouldn't use Linux
This is changing fast:

I don't know where you get this from. Linux is developed by people interested in making it viable. They form together into a developement "community". The only time developement stops is when there is no longer anyone interested in it. If you are interested in an inactive...Last edited by Time2Retire; 11-17-2013, 02:19 PM.
