Second hand treasures at a computer recycling place

    I got a Quadro4 700 XGL AGP video card.

Looks like it has 64 MB, but the ones < 128 MB of that period likely has better clocking VRAM.

So far, the Quadro4 700 XGL has been working without even a single messed up pixel in 2D so far.

The 64 MB GeForce 4 Ti4200 I had that I gave away in 2008, had some mysterious, but sporadic pixels in 2D when cold, seemed to have a loose solder joint.

I had some random pixels on 2D Windows objects, especially when I had cold air of less than 20 F blowing into the case.

    But was stable in 3D.

And another AGP video card that looks like a Radeon 9800 Pro.
    Haven't tested that one yet.

Then I also picked up fresh PATA cables.

After cleaning the attic, I have a HUGE box full of PATA cables and floppy cables!!

Nice score on the old quaddro. Crappy gaming cards, but great for anything 2D.

FWIW, I got bored and put W7 Ultimate (to try a 'loader', which worked) on a dell precision 470 running a pair of dual core 2.8GHz Xeons and 8gb RAM...yea, a QUAD CORE precision 470 WITH HT, shows 8 CPU's!! I love making crap hardware do things it was never intended.. For a netbust wonder, it runs surprising well with 7....thats my only second hand treasure story of the week. This post was made from it.

My twin xeon netburst rig runs W7 pretty well. W7 was made to use multiple threads so having 4 or 8 virtual CPUs (and a decent GPU) really makes it fly.

Re: Second hand treasures at a computer recycling place

It's the same gen as a GeForce 4 Ti. And the card is longer than most.

Looks like it has a beefy GPU and VRAM. Got it to see if earlier 3ds Max versions fly on a socket 462 rig.

Fat chance of having FZs! The FZs on my eVGA GeForce 7600 GS made me dump it, because I don't want fried AGP and the like!

Actually, OpenGL should have better performance. IIRC, Quadros are tuned for OpenGL.

And the GeForce of the same gen appears to in fact be a crippled Quadro.

        It's definitely not cheap-looking like a stinking FX5200 and FX5500.

The only real con I can see is that they don't have pixel shader 2.0. IIRC, it's 1.1.

Because pixel shader 2.0 debuted with the FX series.

I'm wondering if all regular market segment video card models are slower in 3ds Max?

You can flash any regular card's BIOS to its Quadro equivalent. On some you don't even have to bother to flash it, you can do it via the drivers.

There was a GeForce version that appeared to have more VRAM, too there. (VRAM chips on the back side)

The Quadro4 I have don't have VRAM chips on the back side.

Re: Second hand treasures at a computer recycling place

I was there again yesterday. Saw many video cards with missing SMD caps and etc.....

I pushed them off to a hidden place.

Saw what looked like an AGP Radeon X700 Pro and that looked fine.

Also saw some more bulging caps on a couple of video cards. Including what looked like an "Asiacon"??? (IIRC) Was purple with a Hermei-like vent, IIRC.

                Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

SMEG induction cooker error EA on both left hand side cooktops
                by Gjackson
                Hi all,

I have a SMEG cooktop with a EGO 72.08041.002 power board. The two left hand side cooktops started to slowly fail, sometimes stopping with an EA error (Power board failure according to the manual) after a couple minutes boiling some water and eventually they completely failed and now get an EA error on both of them at all times. Visual inspection of the board went over ok, I checked the IGBT's and rectifiers and they seem fine, what should I look at next as this is the first time I'm fixing an induction cooker, I'm suspecting capacitors in this case, Which ones should I look...

It's a problem that the screen is not output properly.
There is no problem with the capacitor with the naked eye.
There is no problem when I look at it with the tester.
Is there a place where I can download the graphic card scheme?
Unlike WATER PUMP, it's very complicated.

Best tool to place electrolytic SMD caps on a board
                by tony359
                HI all,

I am working on some boards where all 100+ SMD caps have to be replaced (yes, they actually went bad!). I found a workflow to remove them comfortably (two irons, pre-heater and extra hot air for larger ones on ground planes).
When it comes to soldering them back, I add solder to one pad and then I use a plastic tweezer to keep them in the right place while I solder that leg.

The tweezer works - but I was wondering if there is a more "dedicated" tool or whether someone has a better idea. If it was for a bunch of caps then who cares. But because...

RCA WHP141 wireless headphones wired up

OK, this one dates back to 2015! I thought I had posted this, but realized I didn’t when I posted a picture of something else. So here it goes…

Back in 2015, I bought a pair of RCA WHP141 wireless headphones at Micro Center for $2. I even mentioned it in the best cheap/free scores thread right here. Just forgot to follow up with that.

As mentioned back then, these are (were) 900 MHz FM wireless headphones. No modern day Blutooth or anything like that. I knew they wouldn’t be great headphones or even that good… but the price was right! So let’s take...
