    stupid Linux shit... please?

So, I WANT to use Linux, I WANT to stop using Windows.
    But it never fucking works!
    /endrant

Trying to get Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit running on my secondary PC.
Intel Celeron G540, 8GB RAM, Radeon HD 5770 1GB, Dual Dell 20" LCD.

It installs fine, but it's a bit laggy with the default X driver or whatever it's called.
So I went to Additional Drivers, selected the fglrx or whatever it's called. Rebooted, tried to login, I'm stuck at a blank desktop.
If I right click I get the menu, but that's all it will do.

PLEASE help me fix this... thank you.

I use Ubuntu on my main laptop.

But I wouldn't recommend others try, unless they want to mess around.

Once you mess around with setting it up: Clean, smooth, stable, fast, and you never need to reinstall or concern yourself with average security flaws.

To fix your problem enter the grub menu on boot (I think F10?) then select "recovery mode" or whatever it's called now, and select the option, when it appears, to get a basic X desktop (failsafex I think.) From there, reinstall fglrx, or install the open drivers (I forget what they're called but they're supposed to work for most basic 3D better than fglrx.)

        Re: stupid Linux shit... please?

Thanks to I did this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2073193 and now everything is fine:
OK, I 'found' the fglrx driver, figured out how to remove it, and then to make sure everything was cleaned up from my earlier fumblings I removed the ati driver and the radeon driver, then reinstalled the radeon driver.

Maybe it was some earlier error of mine, but it seemed that I could not remove fglrx until I navigated to /usr/share/fglrx.

        Then:

        sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglRx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev* xorg-driver-fglrx
        sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon
        sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-radeon
        sudo reboot

the desktop came up looking good, but the display was slow until I also added the ati driver

        sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati

        and rebooted.

Things look snappier but system settings > details shows the graphics type as 'unknown'. That doesn't seem right, am I missing something?

        thanks,

Now... to try it on my laptop I've been meaning to re install the OS, so now's as good of a time as ever. It's painful copying 20GB of stuff to a shitty old USB 2.0 external drive before I wipe my SSD and re-install.
If it doesn't work, I'll take the SSD out, sell it, and then sell the laptop, and then buy a new one... have to sell my iMac and my tablet first though!

            hit it with a hammer.

but in all seriousness, desktop use. replace windows.
for servers? nothing beats centos (or debian, if you're not running cpanel or solusvm)

12.10 has been hit and miss (I run the gnome remix on my D630). Took an unusually high amount of work to make the graphics work... and it does have a current binary (unlike my main rig).

I too like linux but due to the higher amount of bull puckey lately I'm down from 3+ linux rigs to just a headless file/print server (no GUI, debian stable) and a single partition on my triple booted D630 (I do use the linux third most of the time).

To me, Linux means a lot of "hand holding" and patience. I used it steady on a bench pc for a couple of years, but decided that the limitations outweighed the advantages. It's fun to play with & if you are a techy geek you can learn a lot.

At that time I was big into audio/video editing, and I ran into snag after snag in my quest to get it to function correctly.

100% in the consumer market. You still can't top a good linux server though. Win servers are tolerable, but its the typical microshaft bullshit of licenses, fees and nonsense to make things work.....Linux = none of that!! You just can't beat a *nix server! Back in the old days of winservers, I cheated....to get vhost. Win2k A/S + apache made for a decent entry level or quickie server with the best of both worlds....IIS with FP extensions if needed and vhost for all that cheap shared hosting.

I also think the same way, I installed fedora 18 a few weeks ago to try it out but it kept crashing, it took me back to 04 trying to run redhat. Don't get me wrong I liked redhat and I still have all my installation cd's from back in the day but since I'm not running a server I prefer to run windows.

I have loaded earlier versions of Ubuntu on several "older" computers and had great results, very few problems. But....I just attempted to load Ubuntu 12.10 on an old pullout mother board from a Gateway - an Intel D865GLC board. Ubuntu loaded and looked like everything was OK. Started it up after loading, logged in as user, and got the desktop picture.....nothing else. Nothing to click on. Not sure if it is because the mobo is a propriety board, the video is not supported, or maybe bad cd with the Ubuntu file.

All we have to do is partition the Windows filesystem as such:
                                  / 10GB
SWAP 2 times RAM (if RAM ⇐2GB otherwise RAM + 2GB is plenty)
/vz remaining space (templates & virtual servers will be stored here)
                                  and then run this:
                                  wget http://soluslabs.com/installers/solusvm/install chmod 755 install ./install
For some reason I don't think that will work

That's because your graphics driver is running in VESA mode. Right click on the desktop, you should get a menu, go to change desktop background. This will get you into the settings program (albeit, without a title bar or anything lol)...
then go to Details and then to go Graphics.

                                      Got to graphics. It says:

                                      Driver Unknown

                                      Experience Standard

There is no button for changing anything. All I can do is return to settings.

                                          Hello,

this is a very strange Problem:

Notebook hang instantly on Boot. BIOS is accesable.
Windows: instant after showing "loading circle", even Windows Boot Stick hang instant (even without installed SSD/NVME )
Linux: instantly (if Linux Boot in leagacy Mode with log messages: Machine Check exception after 0.25 sec)

                                          i have tried:
                                          - only one RAM Stick, another working RAM, both RAM channel
                                          - BIOS Flash to newest Version F.50, BIOS Reset
                                          - Memtest86 hang instant at Test 2
                                          - HP UEFI Diagnostic wont find...

                                          Dear all,
I forgot my BIOS password of my Surface Pro 3, I searched for solutions for a long time and knew that by using FPT to dump my bios to bin file and using decryptor, I can get my BIOS password.
Now I have a problem that I am unable to dump my BIOS into bin file.

My Surface Pro 3 currently runs on Ubuntu 22.04, with Secure Boot enabled and Boot From SSD Only.

I searched for FPT but there is no Linux version and none of them work.
I hereby request a copy of Intel Flash Programming Tool for Linux x64.
I would really appreciate it if anyone...

MS Surface Book 3 - Keyboard works only in UEFI/Linux
                                          by survivalbloke
This is a very weird issue which I'm having trouble finding a common thread.

The keyboard is registering keypresses in either the UEFI, or a live Linux USB environment - I used Ubuntu for testing. The keyboard backlight is lit.

The keyboard is registering keypresses in Windows or any Windows-related bootable device. For example, it does not work in Hirens Recue or a Windows 11 bootable installer.

When booted to Windows, not only is the keyboard not registering keypresses, but my USB keyboard is not either!

                                          USB mouse and integrated trackpad...

SPD reading/writing under Linux and/or Windows

                                          Hi all,
Where can I find the mysterious 'eeprom' kernel module that some use under Linux to read/write SPD?
I installed 'i2c-tools' and got 'decode-dimms' tool under Debian but not under Fedora, but both of them are missing the 'eeprom' module.
Also tried the SPD.exe tool from EVGA, which correctly lists all of the DIMM slots but reads zeroes from all of them.
Basically I need to dump SPD from some modules that were sold to me as DDR-1866 but are made of DDR-1600 chips, and they do not work. There is no access to RAM clock rate in the BIOS, so I am SOL unless I can rebin...
