    A New DVD Burner

OK after a month of crashing, and strange errors I fixed this Dog! Now I need some advice. The core of my problems turned out to be the "great" Sony DRU-800A DVD burner....again! This is the second one to crap out on me. I'm going to go with a different brand this time. Would the Pioneer DVR 108 or the NEC ND 3500A be good choices for me? I rip a few movies now and then, and use the DVD as the boot drive for reloading XP Pro when I need to. My mobo is the Chaintech 7AJA2E with a 1 GHz Duron CPU, and 512 megs of PC 133 RAM. My graphic card is the 7200 series ATI Rage All In Wonder AGP card.

It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

Pioneer, NEC, LG are all good choices

http://club.cdfreaks.com/ is a good source for info

if you rip movies you will need hacked firmware for some of the drives to enable ripping faster than 1x.

I have a NEC DVDRW in my system, its never given me a single problem, or even so much as ever made a coaster.

BTW Junk Parts, that avatar cracks me up.

I would go with the NEC for sure. Two reasons - NEC DVD was my first DVD and it working great up to todays. All these LG craps did not allow me to regulate the speed (necessary to have quiet movie) and so on.
Second reason, it is very easy to upgrade the NEC 3500A to a RPC1 device, so you are regions free to play DVDs. NEC got thumbs up by me as well

Sadly you don't going with 3550A - that could be upgraded easily to 4551A:

ahhhh sony! that is likely a rebadged liteon.
i guess they are doing a good job smearing their name.
rebadging cheap hardware, rootkitting folks pc's,and now battery bombs.
i know by experience those nec drives are just about bulletproof.

Another recommendation for the NEC 4551A: both my wife and I have one in our machines, and it's worked just flawlessly.

I like BenQ 1650 very much.

I recommand it, because it burns DVD in good quality with cheap DVD-R.

                      Re: A New DVD Burner

Topcat - I think my bro might want it He bought a LG LCD pannel instead of a bit more eqpensive BenQ witch I liked more and less that 6 months ago it died. First it started with problems to kick-in, then these get more and more serious and finally it won't power on. Just great.
I willing to bet that the caps into the power supply of this LCD are something like GSC or such shit and therefore the power give up to start the backlight, so no kick in...

I would like to think he learn the lesson, since the 17" CRT monitors he bought for himself and sis have very curious geometry indeed. Imagine that the round smiley is round on these monitors only in the corners, in center is is very clearly cone...! So, after that experience one should stay away from LG, and not buy another LG...
Not one bad pixel, tough - even in the replacement. However the colors is awfull, like 16bit ones with dithering + entierly absent all dark tones...

I think twice before buy a LCD for other that text or testing stuff...

                      dkperson - I think is joking ...

it seems if you get a good one benq is ok.
its the 10 duds you have to go through to get that 1 that sucks.
of 5 dvd r drives the shop bought last year 1 is still in service .and it is at deaths door.

Thanks to everybody! My next drive will be an NEC. Hopefully it will be the 3500A. I'm going to find one, and buy it now for when I need it. That DRU-800A Sony wasn't my problem after all. I was the problem! John didn't KISS "Keep It Simple Stupid!". My system is up, and running like a Big Dog again with the Sony. It does have a new mouse now! Thats right! It was the Logitech "Lazar" beam mouse all along causing my crashes. In fact just maybe that mouse caused me to warranty that Sony the first time too! This system is like a Rock again! I love it! This forum is the best thing that I have ever found online. You Guys, and Girls are Fine people. Hats off to everyone who gave me feedback. Junk Parts Lives Again! God Bless! This is "Junk Parts" today! Thanks to everybody!

I used to see BenQ recommended a lot. Plextor also has one of their drives made by BenQ. Philips has a joint venture with BenQ and philips used to make the best transports in the audio sector. alas most audio transports are sony now.....

still it is not ok anymore to recommend a brand, everybody is releasing turds every so often. i am not so sure about the LG 4167 i have, on some media it is not recognised on other drives. my plextor 716 in the office is pretty good but was expensive. i wouldnt mind finding another plextor 708a its perfect for audio or dvd ripping. i will try NEC next time
