Retired with Honors - Inspiron 5100 Laptop

This little jewel was given to me back in 2004 by an elderly fella who bought it for his elderly wife in 2002. Ok, story time!!

One day she tripped over the cord and broke the charger plug in the back of the unit. He took it to one of our local 'experts', who proceeded to tell him it was not repairable, but then tried his damnedest to weasel it out of them for 'parts'. This "tech" is a real pile of shit, I've never gotten along with him...he does this kind of crap to people all the time... He refused to give it to him, and took it....to a friend of mine who owns a TV shop, who referred him to me (he doesn't do computer work), and he brought it to my house. I told him it would definitely be fixable, but it would be a few days before I could open it up look at it, I was recapping boards and still working at the airport at the time, so I was pretty busy. He said no problem, call me when you know something.....so a few days later, I open it, the plug is broken, no PCB damage, and I figured $50 bucks out the door for the repair. I call him and tell him that, he tells me his wife got impatient and bought a new one...she sold stuff on ebay and on our local classifieds website...and because of that last jackroot, she had been without it for 2 weeks by the time I got it. I told him its still well worth fixing, and she could put it up for sale and recover some of the money she paid for the new one....he said why don't you keep it and sell it....that's your specialty not mine....at that point, I was kinda at a loss for words, so I just said 'are you sure'? ..that's a lot of money to kiss off (these were still worth a few hundred bucks at the time).... He said yea, you're the only computer man in this town that didn't jerk us off.... I said thanks, I appreciated it...and the phone call concluded....

I didn't even have a laptop at the time, so I figured I'll fix it and use it....and that's what I did.... The jack was $10 shipped, and that was that.

Its a blazing fast 2.66GHz 533FSB netbust wonder, and had 256mb RAM in it with XP pro on a 40gb IDE 4500rpm drive. It has a 16mb dedicated GPU on it (32mb was the upgrade, but I never did it). I did upgrade the RAM to the max supported, which was 1gb, and did a clean reload of the OS. I ran the hell out of it until 2009 when I turned it on one day and the HDD was clicking like an old metronome....and it wouldn't run past POST....and the batt would only stay up for about 30 minutes before dying.... I keep no crucial data on my laptops, so no biggie. I shelled out about 100 bucks and got 2 new batteries and an 80gb HDD (forgot if its 7200 or 5400)....reloaded it, and here we are today... Still cranking along, slow as molasses compared to todays stuff, but still 100% reliable!! Not bad for an almost 11yr old laptop... I've seen a lot newer and nicer not live half as long (cough *shovenose's macbook air* cough)!!

    Here she be:
    15" @ 1024x768....yikes!!

Weighs 9.6lbs, 10oz more than the replacement laptop

There was a time when this was an impressive spec page.....

Sitting idle with one FF window open.....FF and symantec corp edition sure gobble RAM these days!

...and with every retiree, someone has to take its place.... I put the finishing touches on my Precision M6300 that was given to me with a dead battery. CPU is a C2D T8300. A new batt cost $28 shipped, I up'd the RAM from 4gb to the max of 8gb (cost another $50), and I bought the upgraded fx3600 512mb GPU (had an fx1600 256mb), and that cost $80 iirc. ...so roundabout 158 bucks in a kick ass laptop!!

No number pad and nice big palm rests!!

Not the best there is, but one hell of an upgrade from the 5100! 1920x1200 on a 16x10 17" display sure is nice!

Thinner magnesium & aluminum casing, and 10oz lighter than the 5100.

Some leftovers from the M6300's surgery:

The old fx1600 256mb video card. This was a wonderful laptop to disassemble, not a nightmare like most.

    Side by side...

...and those wondering where the EEE went since the new SM system was put in the office, here it is....

I have no idea what to do with this poor old 5100...they're going for around 50 bucks for a beat up one on ebay....I havent found one in good shape to compare to...

Wow. 11yrs old and still running. The modern Inspirons aren't anywhere near as well made as that.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

Keep it as a spare... Old laptops come in handy (this was posted with my old laptop).

I have the exact same 5100 laptop. I bought it from someone off craigslist back in 2005? for $50. I used it for until I got a netbook last year. It still works, but the CPU runs hot (like 50C during idle) even though I have reseated the CPU and put on new thermal paste. I haven't used it in about 10 months and wonder if I can get my original $50 back or just keep it as a spare in the house.

BTW, your example of inline pictures with a story is well done and makes sense.

I have a Gateway solo 2150 that works other than a 100% housed battery and a few missing screws (the RAM cover is held on with duct tape). It is a 1999 model... a 433MHZ celeron Mendocino... It runs windows 2000 (it didn't linux up too well).

This was new too. Micron memory. I have a good source for RAM, and as long as I dont abuse it, I get killer deals.... Thats why the 16gb of memory in the latest SM build only cost me 120 bucks...the cheapest I found that for anywhere else was over 200.

I now feel super dumb... I had to fork over $55 for mine... Not that 8gb would have helped that much, 4gb is plenty... And I got a decent warranty on mine... Did you?

I don't think 50C @ idle is bad for a laptop considering they reach 60C-70C even during light load quite easily, though I know that due to power-saving features like Intel's "speedstep" that 40C @ idle is more common in modern laptops. That said, I also think that Inspiron 5100 looks nice. I haven't had much experience with Dell laptops. My family currently has one "Inspiron 1764", which has been okay so far, but I have no idea how long it'll last. We used to have an Inspiron 8200 from 2002-2006. In 2006 the LCD stopped working as well as the keyboard (so it was recycled thereafter), but other than that it worked well. All I remember is that it had an Intel Celeron 1.2 GHz, 256MB of SDRAM, S3 integrated graphics (up to 32MB of shared memory), a 20GB HDD, and a DVD-ROM. It was rather slow but at least it was stable for a while.

One thing's for sure, though, no matter the brand, they don't make them as durable as that Inspiron 5100 is anymore, and deliberately at that.

Yes my MacBook didn't last that long. But in its defense its likely a software issue not a hardware failure. Still inexcusable for a $1200 computer. Well see what the "genius bar" says about it...

Awesome old laptop! I also think you should keep it as a spare. I have a similar one, except with a 2.4/512/400 P4. It's slow...but it idles at 32C and under load it only gets up to 56C. They're good laptops, mine has a 9 cell battery so the battery life is great, I just hate that there is no internal Wifi and there is no mini PCI slot in it...I use it on occasion, and it looks brand new

Lifetime = 2 or 3 years (Well, that's what the expected lifetime usually is around here)

the *original* problem this guy actually had was a broken power jack. I had his laptop sitting in my passenger side seat, and when I opened the passengers side door, I didn't realize it had slid close to the door. So it fell to the pavement and broke the screen

I read the horror stories about the 5150's overheating problem...and yes, the cooling in the 5100 is definitely lacking....but on that note, I've never had any overheating issues or other strange problems like that...and I've used this laptop in some pretty harsh environments.....like outside at Z Meets with it 95* heat, using it for diagnostics on Z cars, so it was getting banged around on test runs (this was before I got a netbook for that). It has been a really good one, I must admit.

After some fleabay and CL research, its worth maybe 50~75 bucks...... for that, I'll just hang onto it. Good spare.

man, you got to be serious. I can't even stand dual core. Anyway, I tried to repair a 5150 with blinking cursors and now they don't blink anymore. The c chip is fine, but to make sure, I re-soldered it. There were some "flat" chips that got burn, maybe this was the problem. I also think it could be the graphic card because some people reported that it could be damaged due to the heat, but at this point I'm pretty much gave up. What the *** could I did wrong that made the cursors not to blink anymore. Not sure what to tell my customer.
