    The magic of Christmas

A friend is supposed to come by and transfer some music on his new phone. At home he no longer has a computer (he moved out of town and came for Christmas to see his folks), so he called me if i could help.

As you remember, here at my grandparents' place i have the dual-PIII. I remembered that the USB 2.0 card wasn't getting recognized, and it'd be a pain doing it with USB 1.1 on the motherboard. I had 2 USB 2.0 cards, both with VIA chipsets, same results - no worky in PCI slot 3.

I suspected a dud PCI slot. So i moved the smaller of the two USB cards in PCI slot 2, the only other free one. Aka right below the video card, PCI slot 1 being taken by the Pentagram cooler i have on the 9800 Pro.

At this point i have to mention that my case doesn't have separate screw holes for each card, but instead it has a bracket held in place with 2 screws which secures all the cards. That's why i hate having to install a new PCI card because all the cards move around when i take that bracket out, sometimes knocking the video card out of its place so the system will no longer boot untill i wiggle it around.

Now, the USB 2.0 card worked in slot 2. However, my soundcard wasn't getting detected anymore. More wiggling later... alright, my sound is back. And another surprising event happened - i had left the other card in PCI slot 3, i hadn't removed it. Guess what? That one got detected as well. I now have more USB ports than i can shake a stick at. 4x USB 2.0 on each card plus 2x USB 1.1 on the mobo. This is one "full option" computer - 2 CPUs, all RAM slots full (4x 512, 1GB sticks SDRAM were unobtanium unfortunately), and now all PCI slots full too (2x USB controllers, SATA controller, sound card) and a ton of USB ports to boot.

    Merry Christmas everyone!

I hate those cheap POS cases with one bracket holding all the cards in (or rather not holding them in)..
Had so many problems with them.. like cards "hanging" in the slots, losing contact on one side of the connector -> not detected. (which is probably exactly what your problem is/was lol)

And I'm glad my mainboard has "enough" USB ports out of the box..
8x USB 2.0 at the back + 4 via headers

This is actually a nice case, and i rather like it. Been having it for like 5 years... and other than the side plexi cracking because stupid me tightened the fan screws too hard after i cleaned it, it's been serving me just fine.

        Maybe IRQ routing issue?
        .
Some old boards needed it set manually in the BIOS to 'make it stick'. (Not change again later.)

Nope, deffo no IRQ issue as the BIOS hasn't been touched during this time. Just an old-fashioned, electrical connection related thing.

That was kind of my point.
You may need to in order for the new card to work.
Particularly as the board is a P3 server board.
PnP was called Plug 'n' Pray back then.

Well the "new" card had been sitting in that slot for over an year without getting detected, and moving it to another slot made it work.

                Re: The magic of Christmas

Some slots share IRQs and resources - it may just be the case that as you moves the cards they were both able to get the resources they needed.

Anyway, while I understand you're happy and I'm happy for you, somehow this seems to me as pretty... how to put it and not sound offensive... oh well... shitty reason to say it's MAGIC of Christmas...

I would understand if it was about changing someone's life or having a baby or getting together with some long lost relatives or friends but getting a card working again?

                  Re: The magic of Christmas

Eh, i could call it the BOREDOM of Christmas then. And i'm 100% sure it was an electrical connection issue, because the board is old, the slots are flaky and the mounting method to the case isn't exceptional.

As for changing peoples' lives, that's my "day job"... I can hardly call that magic anymore, it's just something i do.

rx580 not detected/ no display/ messing with primary card
                    by woody-009
                    Hi everyone

I've got a bit of a funny one, I've got an rx580 that is not detected/ wont display. It had all of the voltages needed on the core, memory, memory controller, 1.8 and 1.8 enable but the core wasn't getting warm. I found a 1k ohm resistor that was maybe missing from the pex reset A11 pin (R120 it didn't look like it was originally there but is on the board viewer). Now my core is starting to get warm but its still not detected. I have found that I don't have a 3.3V VDDC_VDDCI_PWROK signal because I don't have a 3.3V VDDC_PWR_GOOD signal to the nc7sz08p5x U1000 chip, I...

Marian Trace Alpha sound card repair help
                    by Christos Tsiligiannis
                    Hello to the forum.

My name is Christos, I am new to the forum here and i am posting from Greece.

So i have this old German sound card from Marian, called Trace Alpha. To be exact i have 2 of them and i use them professionally for my small FM radio station here. The first one works like a charm, but the second one does not work at all.

To be more specific in the same exact pc with windows 7 (i even tried 32bit) the one works while the other doesn't.

So i tried asking for a schematic from the company and they would not give me one. Instead they...

                    Graphics Card mounting frame
                    by Kemer
Hello, I removed the graphics card from my laptop and I want to heat it in the oven. What I want to ask is, is it okay to heat the card without removing the metal mounting frame on it?

As you can see in the photo, there is a plastic (black) gasket between the metal frame and the card. It sticks the frame tightly to the card.

I previously removed the metal frame while heating it, but it is quite difficult to separate it from the surface it is attached to. If there is no problem, I do not want to remove it.

What worries me right now is the possibility that...
