    Your dependence on the internet?

So I thought I'd see what people relied on as far as the itnernet.
Personally, I rely on the internet for pretty much anything.
Entertainment: Pandora and Netflix(only until the end of the free trial of Netflix tho)
Communications: Skype (I never talk on the phone because I get NO SERVICE at my house)
Income&Work: I make money online (well, a little bit if I'm lucky, but still...)
    School stuff: Google Docs
SEcurity: Anti-virus needs to update often...
Gaming: My Minecraft server is boring when I'm only one on it; because if my internet is down nobody else can connect)...
Everything else: hotmail.com, forums, and stuff

Basically almost EVERYTHING I do is done on the computer. and almost EVERYTHING I do on the computer is online...
So when my internet is down I can't do ANYTHING...

    what about y'all?

Entertainment, email, forums, research, eBay, porn (which I suppose could be included in entertainment ).
I pay for 'up to 10Mb' on my cable connection and rarely does my speed drop below 9.7Mb - and that's checking with 6 seperate test sites. In 14 months with my ISP I've only had loss of connection on two occasions, both for less than 12 hours, so I'm very happy with my service.

      Lucky mofo
I get "up to 6mbps" DSL, I'm always from 0mbps (as in not working) to 2mbps...
If I'm lucky I get mbps but that's only a few times a week.
My estimated internet uptime is about 90%

Last time the "technicians" came out they fucked up the connection even more. The first technician looked like a hobo, the second was nicer and more helpful...
In addition, they charged us $49.99 for the service when we were promised $19.99. My mom called and gave them shit, maybe next month the bill will be right...
      I hate AT&T.

We were gonna get great Comcast Cable Internet but somebody *cough* mom *cough* decided it was too expensive... But comcast would have been cheaper as far as time wasted...

Maybe you should help your mom towards the cost - I bet you spend more time on the connection than she does. And you offering would certainly make her day
Just checked my speed now, download is 9.75, upload 1.0 - not brilliant but it suits me and is fine for what I pay - and like I said it's consistent.

Re: Your dependence on the internet?

I use it for forums, publishing reviews on HWI, buying and selling computer bits, and that's about it. For Entertainment, I have both FSX and a TV tuner, I earn most of my $ at work, and eating or sleepin aside, that's about all I ever do.

In other words, having no internet annoys me, but I'll live.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

I pay half of the internet bill. And I'm usually the one who is on the phone with AT&T regarding it not working. She only calls them about billing issues.

I went to speedtest.net, then when it was done, I clicked share, then forum, then copy, then simpy pasted into the quick reply box

Yep, same here. I have a life besides all this internet stuff, although I think it's great to have all the resources of the web a few clicks away.

Any idea what your 'copper mileage' from your house to the switch or CO is?

The further out you are, the worse the attenuation of the higher band signals that make DSL 'work' is... And phase shift between the different carriers also gets worse.

Try a few pings and tracerts at or during peak hours. I'll bet you'll see some packet loss. The 'best' part of the DSL 'scam' is you pay tier-based rates, but there's zero basis for delivering them. Someone 50 feet from a switch may pay $50 or so and get whatever passes for full speed, you pay the same and do not. As do those too far away... If their system can't deliver bandwidth at a given location, with reasonably low (none?) packet loss, why should you 'subsidize' them??

You pay for 6 down, 768 up, but get those garbage rates? You should be paying the same as what others pay for such lousy speeds.

                                    DSL, what a kludge...
                                    "pokemon go... to hell!"

                                    EOL it...

Yes DSL sucks and AT&T makes a sucky system even worse...

Around here, ADSL is as good as it gets. There is no such thing as cable. at least you can get up to 24Mbps on ADSL if you live in the right place.
