I had netzero...at some point my mom (back then I was barely into computers), fell for their boosted dialup. We got stuck in another damn contract and then we ditched them for att...

I can have netzero with a plain ol' Dial-up Networking connection, anywhere I want.

Did a little "RAS Spying" a few years ago and got the raw/unobfuscated username and pass.

No java-shit app, no 'features.' Only a normal dial up 'connectoid.'

      Netzero, "fo real."

That's what my broken VTel DSL looked like in winter, 2011!

The download plunged to 1.5 Mbps, but the upload hardly changed, if at all! (at least still close to 680 kbps)

It took until February 8, 2011 for it to stay normal!

You may have a fucked up exchange!

February 8, 2011 in the AM was like a real late Christmas present! I got 11.5 Mbps for download and 710 kbps for upload!

Lol my upload is usually very good... While my download is terrible...that's why I think they've simply overloaded their network...

By the way, I sort of re-did my network (took me 2 hours lol)
-New 2Wire modem (my old one, well, I'll upload a pic at some point)
-Linksys 54G router flashed with DD-WRT (interesting experience) set up as an unsecured "Lanai-Guest" (Lanai=name of apartment building) network for the entire apartment, with QoS limited to 100K down/up
-Reset Netgear Wireless N router to factory settings for the heck of it, then I set it all up again. Don't know why, but it fixed the problems I was having with it arguing with the Linksys as DHCP server...
-Replaced core switch of network (Linksys 10/100 with Netgear Gbit)

            Last 30 Days
            (2011-11-14 to 2011-10-16)
            Total 832.68 GB

Umm...I guess I use it a lot? I work from home a few days a week. I can easily move 10s of GBs in a day just for work stuff.

This appears to be a common DSL problem.

If your indoor lines look fine, I would go into the router config and look for the "coding gain" option and raise it, first, I would start with 5.

My BEC 7402TM router recently refused to go higher than 10.6 Mbps until I changed the coding gain.

Lol! Yeah that is obviously wrong...
The raw speed might be great but it actually browses a lot slower, because the network cOnnectiOn has to go through Lightspeed Content Filter... Great at blocking all the useful stuff and use less at blocking the real bad shit like porn...

Re: Your dependence on the internet?

I use the Internet daily for emails, news, forums and sites like memebase etc.

Online shopping and eBay\Trademe is also very useful. Would pay a heck of a lot more for electronic parts if I bought them all at local stores.

Cloud computing can be useful but I don't like the idea of entrusting my personal data to some random corporation, especially with the increase in 'hacking' incidents, so I use it minimally.

Shovenose, what you describe with your internet connection is about what I had a couple of years ago with mine. Disconnection\speed problems, useless technicians either doing nothing or making it worse and in general was getting sick of it.

Then they did a major upgrade and installed ADSL2+ cabinets all over the show, and everything is great.

Get a perfectly stable connection at ~16000\1200 kbit synch rate now.

My problem is that I'm farly certain that upgrade is never going to happen - at least not in my lifetime... That's AT&T for ya! :P
