My recommendation is don't use a big bloated pile of junk like Norton which is hard to uninstall unless you don't mind fiddling with the registry and where to look deleting keys. A couple AVG and Avast work just fine but don't have it running as a service hogging up resourses all the time. If you need to scan a partition or one file then open it and then close it so it's not wasting your ram and cpu. Why use it if not needed when you need it not all the time.
There is no reason to have it running all the time for eg a .jpg doesn't need to be scanned that you got in the mail but other things do like an .exe .com .bat of course.
The pay ones like nod32 work great but will still try to inject themselves as a service which can be put to manual in admin/services.
