  • Dell 2007 FPb went black all of the sudden.

Before this I noticed sometimes a very very slight flicker that would go away then one day blam just black. I thought it might be the backlight or something. So after taking it apart it has 4 boards, the PSU all the caps looked fine but two of the others had slightly buldging caps from a brand called Elite which i never saw before. all the bulging ones are 24v, I'm wondering if it's even worth fixing something that old to resell and messing with it for ages. From what i heard Dell doesn't send out extra boards or stock them. So i counted about 8 or so caps that looked suspect. Would someone here...

  • Re: Where do I find tourque specs on WD drives?

Because the lid is screwed on to the case and the arm itself plus the spindle on the platters. What else can you call the lid it's just the aluminum top with tiny torx screws....

Well i did talk to someone from Gillmore that said 5 to 10 ft lbs is close enough but others I talked to said it was a trade secret. Funny as hell and this company i'll send the drive to if i can't get it to work or read data....

Did I talk to you on the phone a day ago or so? Proprietary information for some bloody screws? What is that some ancient chinese secret like laundry detergent or something. Some fucking screws are top secret like missle launch codes now, what a joke. Meanwhile the chinese are hacking us daily and stealing.

it's not even a joke it's not funny at all in the least them stealing shit from us.

This is getting beyond ridiculous, now cars have chips in them that are closed source and...

  • Where do I find tourque specs on WD drives?

I'm looking for the torque specs for the lid on western digital drives and looked all over the net. Found all kinds of pdf on those drives but not specs on that anywhere. I have someone in town that has a special screwdriver that can be set but i don't know the lbs per inch.

Western Digital site is pretty much useless for finding anything.

The model is a WD400BB. Would appreciate if someone can point me to a site that shows it.

  • Re: Hard drive click of death

Ok with the mistake of taking the cover off without being warned, I got it to click on once and spin up after playing with the tension on the screws by hand. I don't have a tourque screw driver. Now to replace the bios chip to see if it can be read it looks tricky and too small to do with a soldering pen. From what i saw you need a heat gun with a small blower to remove and replace.

Now if i can only find someone in this area that knows how to do that.

So all might not be lost.

  • Re: Hard drive click of death

Oh cool now i have to look for the preamp too lol. I'm thinking it might be easier finding an exact exact match from the serial numbers on the original board rather than using a board from the same doner drive which is the same cept one said taiwan and the other malaysia but with the exact same model num but look slightly different the boards.

Since the lid was only taken off for a min to a take a pic and not powered up worth it to find an exact match on the board?

  • Re: Hard drive click of death

Ahah finally found the number, was trying to look on the chip but was impossible to see at all, but on the board next to it was U12 on both cept one has a divot in one corner the other does not, and no the old board does not work on the old drive, the new board sort of kind of works on the old drive just the clicking.

So this looks like a bitch to try and desolder something that small and replace it and solder the other in. Maybe i should look for another board for 15 bucks or something.

  • Re: Hard drive click of death

I ran out of time to edit and highlight where i think the chip is. Is the eeprom the little on just above the biggest chip to the right a bit. And can it just be taken out without desoldering?

  • Re: Hard drive click of death

They look different than those two, I just took the actual pics. The one on the left is the new board that works on another drive that is the same but on my dead drive semi works with the clicking. The one one the right the old one is the one that doesn't make a peep at all when put in. The only differece I can see between them is the very top right the color of the chip but the rest looks exact. Sorry for the glare. So it must be that 8 pin one in the middle right?

If so can they be popped out or do they have to be desoldered. Or did i...

  • Re: Hard drive click of death

Could not find anything looking with those letters or numbers, the only thing with 8 pins or which seemed to be because on was under each one and the bottom of the board had 8 solder dots to it was this . Nothing that had U12 on it at all.

The middle outline was from another site mine is at the top, I see nothing else with 8 pins anywhere after looking over and over. and that part attaches to the motor on the spindle to power it, it seems.

As far as opening it and sticking a screwdriver in the arm the later article i dunno...

Where exactly is the eeprom chip, after looking all over the web i couldn't find which one it is. And looking with a magnifying glass i couldn't tell either.

And since I might have hosed it after opening it up when told I should open it up I figure it's worth a try changing the chip and maybe i can tighten the screw just right maybe, If not I'll learn something anyway and will tell others not to open it unless they just want the magnets. Changed the image to one that is like mine exactly.

  • Re: Oh well

Really that's true i don't know the torque specs on some little screw. Do you know the torque specs on every valve cover gasket? No you do not and I know you don't. You don't have to be that condescending really....

  • Oh well

I knew opening it up was a last resort after nothing else worked at all. So what is the worst that can happen it's beyond repair and it's not going to a lab for 40 gigs and pay a fortune for that...oh and thanks for telling me that the screw to the arm has to be a certain torque or it wont work with the lid back on. So now i have to buy a special little torque wrench just for this crappy hard drive now

Oh well at least I can learn how the innards work a bit more and why the arm is stuck to the middle spindle.

    Stupid me years ago thought...

  • Re: Hard drive click of death

Ok here is the pic, i had the camera ready and it was only open for a few seconds. Not sure if i explained it right but with the original logic board on it, it didn't make a sound at all none even a peep, no spin at all. The replacement logic board from a sacrifice drive which does work on that one when swapped then it tries to power up but with the clicks, like off on off on . So the old logic board wasn't working then it's two things now with the inards being stuck.

On edit. The logic board works perfectly fine on the sacrifice drive...

  • How did you get them unstuck

After opening the case what did you use a plastic stick while it was on or off? I may have to try that as a last resort. And exactly what did you do pry it somehow or nudge it?...

  • Re: Hard drive click of death

Actually with the original board it didn't make a sound at all as if it wasn't even plugged in. The replacement board from an identical drive it tries to spin up then click shutdown tries again then click about once every second. My last resort will be to open it up then if that doesn't get it unstuck see if the platter can be taken out and put in the other one. Sounds like 1 in a hundred chance of working doesn't it....

    Re: CDs make me sick

I had a spindle of TDK go bad on me the cdr when only a thirrd were used. It was making one coaster after another and i thought maybe my burner was messed up. So i put in DRdr and it worked perfectly fine. So they went bad with age or some thing just sitting around or indirect sunlight.

Don't really understand how since they were just sitting there. Meanwhile my music cd's sitting in a very hot truck for years and years still work perfectly.

  • Re: Hard drive click of death

Selldoor the usb dongle works just fine on other drives in windows or linux, the click of death is a common problem. Some people have had luck with freezing them or heating them and even dropping them to unlock the heads. Was wondering who had the best luck using what method of getting it to work long enough to pull the data off then throw it away....

  • Re: Hard drive click of death

Swaped the logic board on the bottom the PCB, then at least it started to be recognized cept for the clicking over and over. If that eepron is inside the case it can't be done. Even if a speck of dust gets in then it's gone for good. In other words the old board on it actied like it wasn't even plugged in, the new used one i put in as least some signes of life. Also it's not in an enclosure just plugged into a USB dongle made for just that purpose....
