    Intersil HIP6602BC @ 95ºC?! Is this normal?!

    Hi!

    I have a EPoX 4PEA+ P4 board.

    It has 2 x Intersil HIP6602BC ("The HIP6602B is a high frequency, two power channel MOSFET driver specifically designed to drive four power N-Channel MOSFETs in a synchronous rectified buck converter topology.").

    One of them gets really hot (about 95ºC under P95 with my P4 1800 @ 2400 MHz @ 1,600 V). Since it's connected to 3 x 2200uF capacitor GSC (yes I know that they are "bad", but their capacitance is right, and they are not bulging) these 3 capacitors get really hot two (about 70ºC).

    The odd thing is that when I replaced the GSC with brand new Teapo's the same thing still happens!

    It's this normal? If not, what could be the problem? I can provide more info, if you need.

    The same chip (still) gets really hot during P95 @ 1800MHz (default clock) @ 1,400 V (-0,100 V under the default 1.500V), so it's neither the higher Vcore nor the high clock (OC) that cause this really hot temperature.

      That sounds a bit hot for a pair of chips that are only supposed to turn the MOSFET's on and off. Are both of the 6602's about the same temperature?? From your post, it sounds like one is hotter than the other, which i would not consider to be a normal situation, as all the pairs of MOSFET's should have an equal duty cycle, so the pair of driver chips for them should probably be within 10 C of each other.


      You can go to intersil's website and get the datasheet for the 6602's. Since they're probably not particularly complex, the max temp should be pretty high on them. Max temp for a standard MOSFET is 125 C +, though having them run that hot on a motherboard is not a good thing.

        Intersils are both hot, but there is one hotter than another. Also the coils are pretty hot. The capacitors get also pretty hot, due to their "legs" are near the Intersils, on the motherboard PCB.

        The datasheet states that the max Case temperature is 150ºC, and the max Junction temperature is around 125ºC. On the datasheet it's said that these drivers are suppose to be used on P III and Athlons...but they are used on this P4 motherboard! :o

        Any idea what might be causing so much heat? I don't know if this situation (temperature) is normal, thought, I was not alert to this temperature thing since some time ago.

        At idle, the capacitors next to the HIP6602B are warm. The coils are a little bit warmer than the caps.

        At P95 test they both (caps and coils) get really hot. Intersil HIP's reaches 95ºC at room temperature of about 19ºC. I'm concerned on the Summer when temperatures here at Portugal reach 40ºC.

        Still, I don't recall if this is normal, since I was more "alert" to the temperatures since September last year.

          Update:

          idle temperatures:

          HIP6602 #1 (nearer the caps): 48ºC
          HIP6602 #2 (nearer the coils): 40ºC
